Emerald publishing proudly partners with Research4Life to get more research openly accessible to developing countries

3rd July 2020

Emerald Publishing and Research4Life announced today, that Emerald has joined the Research4Life partnership which gives the publisher the opportunity to aid the non-profit initiative in its mission to make research available across many of the world’s developing countries.

Research4Life is a collective name for 5 programmes which provide developing countries with free or low-cost access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content from over 175 publishers online. The goal of Research4Life is to reduce the knowledge gap between high-income countries and low and middle-income countries by providing affordable access to scholarly, professional, and research information.

Emerald’s publishing missions are aligned to helping to meet the United Nation’s sustainability goals of ‘leaving no-one behind’ by 2030. A target that the company believes can be met when diverse voices are part of both developing and disseminating research, to get the knowledge and information into the hands of those that can make real change happen. Through this partnership, they can be part of that drive towards finding the solutions to help the UN meet their goal by adding Emerald’s research to Reseach4Life’s portfolio, which to date has reached more than 10,000 institutions.

Melissa Fojt, Head of Community Partnerships at Emerald Publishing said, “We believe that research is at the forefront of moving society forward, by getting research into the hands of those making the decisions that drive change. Our partnership with Research4Life opens up more content to people in developing countries so that they can have access to research and be part of the effort to drive change and make a real impact.”

Andrea Powell, STM’s Director of Outreach and the Publisher Coordinator for Research4Life said, “We are really thrilled to be able to include Emerald’s high-quality collection of journals in our offer.  Importantly, these titles extend the scope of Research4Life to include more social science and humanities research, all of which is just as critical for the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”

Emerald believes that research is most impactful when a diverse range of voices are included, and this partnership shows the companies continued commitment to driving change and standing up for the under-represented.

You can see more about the work we are doing by visiting our Power of diverse voices page, where you can read the 2020 Global Inclusivity Report, as well as view free content.

Notes on Emerald Publishing and usage during Covid-19
At present we are living in a difficult and uncertain time around the world, as we face the fight against Covid-19. Now, more than ever, people need quick and easy online access to the information we publish on Emerald Insight and the opportunities to share their research and we are keen to ensure that all of our users have access to research, even if institutions are closed. To help with any issues, and keep people up to date with new information we launched our Customer Support Portal.

We have made research on COVID-19, the management of epidemics and pandemics, and supply chain management free for anyone to access and have also made this available with full text and data mining rights to PubMed Central and the World Health Organisation repository. We will continue to make relevant research freely available on this site.
