Acting responsibly

As a global business, we’re passionate about making a difference and changing lives through learning

Together, we can provide opportunities for people to grow, and impact society in a way that helps build a long term and prosperous future for all. Acting ethically in everything we do remains at the heart of our vision and our responsible business approach is a key driver in achieving this.

Led by global societal challenges identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we are committed to actions that drive positive change within all our communities. This means working with all stakeholders to support education, equity (ED&I) and the environment.

We encourage colleagues to make a difference

We recognise that our colleagues' passion goes above and beyond the day job and we want to give them opportunities to get involved in ways they can create a bigger impact. Whether it’s taking part in our volunteering programmes, charity work or just taking advantage of the many development and mentoring schemes here at Emerald, participation and involvement are always encouraged.

Each employee, regardless of location, has two volunteering days to use per annum on an activity of their choice – we also have an Emerald Volunteering Day.

Charity Partnerships

This year we are aiming to raise £15,000 for BookTrust in the UK, our main charity partner for 2024.

We’ll be doing this via a variety of fun activities such as Dragon Boat racing, Lambfest and a Big Charity Walk. Plus, our very own Director of Data, Dan Molesworth is running Wainwright's Coast to Coast to raise money for our charity of the year.

We’re also supporting a number of organisations through volunteering our time and donating much needed clothes to help further the impact agenda of these organisations.

BookTrust

BookTrust is a UK-based charity dedicated to transforming lives by promoting a love of reading and ensuring that every child has access to books. With a mission to inspire a lifelong passion for reading, BookTrust reaches children and families across the nation through a range of impactful programs. From delivering book packages to babies and toddlers, fostering a love for storytelling, to supporting schools and libraries, BookTrust endeavours to create a world where no child is without the joy and educational benefits of reading.

Participate Project

From small ideas that make a difference in a single community to big ideas that change the world, Participate supports people and organisations to realise their potential. They do this by providing support that helps them develop and grow their ideas into sustainable projects and enterprises.

Each year, they support hundreds of individuals, charities, social enterprises, community groups, businesses, and schools. The projects they support are found in areas of deprivation, tackle social issues, or work with specific client groups in areas such as disability or homelessness.

One in a Million

One in a Million is a charity in Bradford that focuses on providing threshold experiences for young people from disadvantaged communities, by giving them access to sports, arts, and enterprise. In doing so, they hope to support young people to build character, and develop positive lifestyle skills.

Over the course of the year, we will host four "World of Work" experience days with disadvantaged children from each of their partner schools. Find out more about One In A Million by watching their short film, and look out for updates and calls for volunteers.

Chapter One

Chapter One transform children's futures with one-to-one reading support at the time when they need it the most.

Via their Online Reading Volunteers Programme, they connect schools and families with corporate volunteers. These volunteers spend 30 minutes reading online with the same child each week, offering 1:1 support to help transform each child’s reading confidence and ability.

Environment

Caring about the environment goes beyond the pages of a policy document

We strive to be an environmentally responsible company and pledge to create awareness and embed working practices that safeguard the environment, endorse sustainability, both locally and globally. Our six main initiatives include:

  1. Promoting reuse, reduce, recycling and removal, especially our plastic waste.
  2. Utilising green energy and identifying opportunities to reduce energy consumption.
  3. Developing sustainable waste management strategies.
  4. Reducing unnecessary commuting through hybrid working.
  5. Educating and empowering colleagues through training and development initiatives.
  6. Encouraging and enabling colleagues to get involved in environmental projects that benefit our community socially, economically and environmentally.
