Research has told us that making a difference to society is important to you. With a growing interest in open research, many academics are putting a greater importance on the impact of research in society.
This is why our new series of gold open access (OA) journals, give you the opportunity to publish your research that will influence thinking, change policies and practice, and make a positive difference to lives beyond academia.
Since 2019, over 60% of Emerald’s journal author community have already published on topics that are closely aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The OA journal programme focuses on extending these networks, concentrating on co-creating applied, interdisciplinary research. Each of the new open access journals are aligned to one or more UN SDGs to ensure they address many of the existential challenges facing our planet and society today.
All published articles, reviews, commentaries and policy briefs will be rapidly disseminated and published using the author’s choice of Creative Commons OA license.

Emerald Open Research now closed to submissions
In 2019 we launched Emerald Open Research (EOR), an innovative and pioneering open research platform, and a first of its kind within social sciences.
Over the past four years, we’ve been listening to our community of authors to ensure EOR meets their needs and expectations of publishing using a full open research model, including rapid publication, open peer review and commentary.
What we’ve learnt is that, while a number of researchers in the social sciences are ready to embrace fully open research workflows, many still wish to publish in journals with traditional citation-based metrics, or need further support to develop more confidence and experience in managing open data.
As a result, we have taken the decision to close Emerald Open Research at the end of 2023, with the platform now closed to submissions.
Our new gold open access journals will now form part of our open offering, alongside our open access books programme.
