Supporting equal opportunity in Latin America & the Caribbean

Here in Latin America and the Caribbean, we believe in equal opportunities for all; to us, equality is key to unlocking real impact both within the workplace and within our research fields.

We recognise excellence is not distinguished between gender types or any other one single factor that make people unique. This is reflected both within our workplace, where we respect and welcome all individuals regardless of their gender identity, an ethos we also hold true within our wider communities.

We believe that through different and unique viewpoints, we are better able to truly understand the challenges of the diverse range of customers we work with.

Our team covers the vast scope of Latin America and the Caribbean, with colleagues based across the region. We are constantly seeking ways we can support our communities we work alongside, getting research into the hands of those making decisions about things that matter.

The power of diverse voices

We believe representing diversity gives a voice to the underrepresented and unlocks opportunities. From research dissemination and readership – it contributes to resolving some of the challenges we are facing into as a society.

As part of our ever-evolving understanding of what inequality feels like and how we may start to tackle it, we’ve commissioned a global report on inclusivity, it’s a small step in understanding the challenges people face and that we must face into in order to create a fairer, more inclusive society.

You can read the report and supporting content here, it’s free to read, use and share.

One of the challenges in our region is gender equality.  As a publisher, it’s our duty to support the parity of all genders. Likewise, equal rights, open conversations, and freedom to make decisions, should be part of our daily lives.

We are very proud of who we partner with, what we publish and how we amplify the work of those speaking out on these issues.

We’ve been speaking to experts in this field and helping to amplify their voice through their work, both with what we’re publishing and through the content you can find below.

The global inclusivity report 2020

As part of our ever-evolving understanding of our role as a research steward within a social justice framework we’ve commissioned a global report on inclusivity; this is a small step in understanding the challenges people face and that we must face into in order to create a fairer, more inclusive society.

Spotlight on Latin America & the Caribbean

As part of these efforts, we commissioned a global report on inclusivity and the factors that need to change. The report in the Latin America and the Caribbean region found that 79% of respondents within academia believe poverty is the main barrier to achieving an inclusive society. Unemployment was also seen as a significant factor (47%) and gender discrimination not far behind (45%). 94% of respondents believe having an inclusive workplace benefits different ways of thinking. Thoughts from our experts – making real change happen

We’re interested in your views, so we’ve collaborated with several authors in the region to create, blogs, interviews and more and do come back as we’ll be adding to this content over time.

An inclusive society for every person, everywhere

We pride ourselves on representing the under-represented, but we know publishers haven’t always got this right and more can always be done. We’re challenging ourselves by:

  • Making sure our content is representative of the many and not the few.
  • Educating ourselves, and being more conscious of the issues in everything we do.
  • Ensuring our editorial boards, authorship and case studies are as diverse as the population and topics they're created for.
  • Doing everything we can to amplify the work of others that contribute to change.
  • Ensuring all our business activities have a diverse representation.
  • Not supporting, sponsoring or working in partnership with other organisations that do not uphold these values.

That’s because we believe that its only through diverse voices that can we create real impact. Download English transcript of video.

I have published and co-edited 12 books in areas of sustainability and firm internationalization and 7 of them have been published with Emerald. My experience with Emerald has been absolutely wonderful. The entire process from the idea, to the feedback on the book proposal, proof reading, and marketing was exceptionally good. Emerald ensures editors and authors have a high commitment with quality, relevance and rigor. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Emerald as a publisher
