Aims and scope

Gender in Management: An International Journal (GM) publishes empirical research, conceptual and thought pieces from both researchers and practitioners that focus on the subject of gender, within the context of management and leadership. The aim is to enable a community of GM researchers and practitioners to exchange their ideas, develop and contribute to the research agendas and progress the development of GM both theoretically and in management and leadership practice. GM is essential reading for those who want an overview of the current research and practice base in GM and for practitioners seeking ways to develop GM.

Any area of Gender in Management taken from diverse disciplinary perspectives which makes a contribution to gender in management and/or leadership is welcome.

Authors should be explicit in their positions in relation to each of the concepts through precise and clear explanations of in relation to gender, management and/or leadership to contextualise their research.

Coverage includes, but is not restricted to:

  • Management and leadership styles
  • Career issues
  • Equality and diversity issues
  • Forms of capital
  • Flexibility issues
  • Legal issues
  • Work life balance
  • Emotions in the workplace
  • Employee-employer relationships
  • Sexual politics, harassment and discrimination
  • Gender stereotypes
  • Identity issues
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Cross-cultural issues
  • Intersectionality issues
  • Theoretical developments
  • Feminist research methodologies

Gender in Management is also seeking submissions of research related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, research that has a specific, actionable connection to challenges and opportunities in practice. The SDGs most aligned with the journal's topical coverage suggested above are SDG 5 (gender equality) and SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth).

By their very nature, the subjects discussed will be timely, controversial, grounded and contextualised within the interdisciplinary GM fields. These may result from specific community discussions concerning GM e.g. Conference Tracks, Workshops, from international, legislative and/or policy developments.  All submissions should contain a clear statement of the aims of the piece, explanation as to the context, recognition of other points of view, clear theoretical bases, and explicit indication of how the piece influences and progresses current and future research and/or practice in GM.

Whilst encouraging empirical and evidence-based research, we aim to maintain a sound balance between theoretical and practice contributions and authors, regardless of type of manuscript, are asked to spell out the impact/practical implications of their work.
