Mental health – social inclusion & loneliness

Emerald and SDGs
An Emerald mission in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Can the effects of isolation and loneliness be combatted during COVID-19 lockdowns?

It is not easy to take care of our mental health and wellbeing during a global pandemic. Countries are in lockdown, vulnerable people are told to shield and those that live alone are more isolated than ever. Restrictions in our daily lives and working remotely are having a profound impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing and this is often manifesting as loneliness.

It is vital for us all to stay connected and to try and find new ways of keeping in touch during this difficult time. Not only with our friends, family and colleagues but also our community-based networks and resources, health care systems and technologies.
Here we have highlighted some of our latest research and author insights about mental health, social inclusion and loneliness in times of COVID-19.

If you'd like to contribute to the discussion, or have research relating to mental health, we'd love you to get in touch.
