We know our people deserve to be supported and trusted in every area of their lives. This is why our benefits have been driven by what our people need, not just for themselves but for their loved ones too.
From some of the most flexible working arrangements in the academic publishing industry to taking the holidays that matter the most to you, we’re always listening to make sure we offer the things that matter.
Our bonus structure is purpose-driven, reflecting our commitment to doing meaningful work. We regularly benchmark all our salaries to ensure they are fair, but we probably aren’t the highest payers in the market, so if this is a priority then Emerald might not be right for you. Because to us, recognition extends beyond your salary – it encompasses all the ways we acknowledge and appreciate your contribution.

Our approach to compensation
Base salary
We are a small to medium-sized company that invests heavily in flexibility, career development, and work-life balance, so market-leading pay levels are not realistic for us. That said, we review salaries annually and make pay rises based on wage growth, inflation, and the median benchmarking ranges.
When we set salaries for our vacancies, we use two benchmarking databases: one specific to the publishing industry, and one more general. All our roles are paid at between 80% and 120% of the market median.
We obtain market data annually to ensure base salary for all colleagues remains at least 80% of the market median for your role. If your salary falls below 80% of the market median, you will get a corrective pay rise and if it is above our maximum threshold, you will not be eligible for a further pay rise until you fall back within our acceptable range. We do this to ensure fair pay across the organisation.
Discretionary bonus
We also provide an annual discretionary bonus to all eligible staff. New starters become eligible for the annual bonus after finishing their probation period, and it will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
The bonus is made up of three elements:
- Overall company performance (measured by EBITDA target)
- Individual outperformance in your role
- Your contribution to our 3Ps of People, Planet, Prosperity
Bonuses are discretionary and based on us achieving our planned company performance for the relevant year. By way of illustration, in a year in which company targets are met, you can expect the company performance bonus to be around 4% of salary, individual outperformance to be up to a maximum of 12% and contribution to the 3Ps to be a maximum of 2%. The individual and 3Ps elements of the bonus are to reward exceptional performance in these areas and will only be awarded to a minority of colleagues.
Commission roles
Some of our sales-based roles are eligible for commission. This means that your bonus structure is slightly different to the one described for non-commissioned staff. For more details, contact the hiring manager who is interviewing you.
