The north & western Europe regional team is strong, collaborative and customer-focused.
As we are not all located in the same office we connect with each other regularly online or when we can, face to face, to share ideas and learn from each other.
We strive to continually learn and adapt within the ever-changing landscape of publishing and academia, so we can provide a world-class service to our customers. We always go the extra mile to give the customer what they need, whether this is detailed analysis of their usage or providing support to promote the content they have access to. We always want to know what our customer needs and requirements are, so we can help in any way we can.
We have been at the forefront of championing open access to meet the needs of our customers and users, listening and adapting our approach to provide what our customers need.
As a close team, we always come together to celebrate successes and take time to socialise and have a bit of fun too.

Introduction to the team
As a team, we strongly believe in the values of the Emerald towards supporting equal opportunities and inclusivity to all. We don’t have a physical regional office, some of the team are based at the Emerald UK office in Bingley and others are remote workers. We believe that in order to make working from home successful – communication, trust, cooperation along with a good structure is essential. Technology is crucial to making this work.
As with all the teams at Emerald, we work with over 500 customers covering 12 countries, offering Emerald products and services to get research to those who make decisions on things that matter; delivering impact that can be felt, not just words on paper.
If you’d like to contribute to these topics, please get in touch.
Our goals
As a team, we are proud to follow in the footsteps of the wider business to lead the drive towards a more sustainable future. As a company we’ve aligned our research to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Find out more about how we're aligning to the SDGs:
Testimonials
'In 2021, IReL collaborated with Emerald to launch a new transformative agreement, which gives authors the option to publish their work open access without any additional cost, along with giving us continued access to Emerald's subscription content. OA is now as easy as possible for Irish authors using Emerald's services and we're very pleased with the strong uptake of this since the launch.'
Jack Hyland, IReL Manager
'Working with the Emerald team feels like dropping by my friendly neighbourhood publisher. Alison Hope makes it seem like she always has time to chat to hear how things are going, and whenever I’ve had anything I needed to find out more about, whether as a subscriber or an author, she was there, immediately, making things happen. The support teams for subscriptions and journal production lend a competent and attentive hand any time questions arise, and it’s been great to know I could count on them over the past 10 years. '
Karen La Macchia, The European School of Management and Technology (EMST), Berlin
'University of East London have been Emerald’s customer for a long time and I personally have worked with Lisa Rothera for about a decade. The customer support we receive from Lisa has always been exceptional, her reports clear and to the point. Lisa’s clear and methodical approach has been especially appreciated at the point when Emerald introduced a new business model, with the focus on collections.'

Local events & charity
Personally, we like to help out as much as possible by committing our time and efforts to support our local communities by utilising the Emerald volunteering days. Here’s what we’ve been up to recently.
We are committed to making this world a safer and fairer place, and we won’t stop here.
Quality education
We are passionate about providing Quality Education for all and have spent our volunteer days mentoring children and young people in local schools around Bradford. In October, Ian took part in One In A Million’s Charity 5-A-Side Football Tournament, an event which saw 12 local businesses compete in a fantastic competitive spirit to support One In A Million’s work amongst children and young people in Bradford.
Sustainable cities & communities & responsible consumption & production
Everyone has a role to play towards social responsibility and Alison has spent her volunteer days supporting Friends of City Gardens by bagging up leaves and creating compost bins in the Barbican Wildlife Garden. Many volunteers are elderly and get involved for companionship, so having a chat during the coffee breaks has been just as important to them as the heavy lifting that Alison has been doing. Alison plans to do more volunteering with this group in the new year and has offered to run errands for those in need during the winter.
Reduced inequalities
Our founder, Dr Keith Howard made it his life’s mission to create a fairer society. In Keith’s honour, the team took part in a Give Back Day, volunteering for litter picks at Hirst Wood Nature Reserve, donating to foodbanks at our nearest offices and reuniting with our colleagues around the world to walk 736 miles in aid of UN Women, who are helping to ensure every woman and girl has access to safety. We care about our animals too and Matt has been volunteering his time at Whitehall Dog Rescue, one of our Emerald sponsored charities which helps to save and re-home abandoned dogs and cats.
