Emerald Publishing is co-sponsoring the Women in Academia Support Network’s (WIASN) Virtually Undisciplined Conference which takes place virtually between the 31st March and 1st April 2022.
The theme of the bi-annual conference is around interconnectivity and diversity, with particular regard to an intersectional approach to gender diversity that must include race, religion, sex, disability and class.
As part of the conference, Emerald will host two sessions exploring themes of Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity in Publishing and the how, why and when of academic book publishing.
The first session on the 31st March, will be hosted by Danielle Ormshaw, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Manager, and Stephanie Hull, Head of Content Acquisition. This workshop will explore issues publishers face when seeking to redress imbalances and unfairness in the system and indicate some possible ways forward.
The second session on the 1st April, will be hosted by Iram Satti, Commissioning Editor – Diversity & Inclusion and Policy. This session will offer an overview of academic book publishing. Iram will demystify the proposal process, explain what publishers are looking for, and cover burning questions such as why to publish a book, and when might be the best time to think about it.
Emerald has a close relationship with WIASN and has worked with the Network on mutual projects to support academic and research development.
Supporting women in academia is one of Emerald’s priorities, as signatories of the Joint Commitment for Action on Inclusion and Diversity in Publishing, Emerald Publishing is committed to amplifying underrepresented voices in academia and are taking steps to help level the playing field, including its Engage platform and major new campaign to #breakthenorm in academic publishing.
