Purpose and research questions

Issues of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development are highly topical. They determine the contribution of entrepreneurship to the improvement of the quality of life through the placement of large-scale private social investment in the implementation of sustainable development goals. However, a serious problem on the path of development of these processes consists in the lack of data due to the fact that corporate social responsibility practices widely differ from each other and represent a voluntary initiative of enterprises, so they are not disclosed in the standard corporate reporting.

Those enterprises that demonstrate corporate social responsibility experience the gravity of the problem posed. By publishing extensive and complex reports on corporate social responsibility containing disparate numbers, enterprises often fail to derive marketing benefit from social investment. Disorganized information support deteriorates the value of corporate social responsibility practices, rendering them non-transparent and unclear to consumers. When making purchasing decisions, consumers cannot rely on corporate social responsibility data; hence, no higher loyalty to responsible enterprises is developed.

The research on corporate social responsibility practices and their contribution to sustainable development is also impeded due to the lack of factual data. International comparisons are unavailable, and corporate social responsibility practices are characterized by low efficiency without scientific support. This special issue is aimed at addressing the problem posed through systematization and harmonization of available data, information support, and scientific study of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development based on datasets.

The subject of sustainable development is fairly well-covered in the existing research literature, but in one respect only - from the perspective of adoption of sustainable development goals by the international community and their support, implementation and regulation by the State. That said, the contribution of entrepreneurship in sustainable development requires further study. The issues of corporate social responsibility as a source of sustainable development call for an in-depth study. This is limited by the lack of statistical data on corporate social responsibility.

The special issue is primarily aimed at development of scientific methodology and monitoring of the current level of corporate social responsibility in countries across the world, its dynamics and impact on sustainable development of economic systems. The dataset “Corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and fighting climate change: imitation modeling and neural network analysis in regions of the world – 2020” (https://www.archilab.online/en/data/corporate-social-responsibility), that can be accessed on the official website of the Institute of Scientific Communications, can be used for this purpose. The second goal consists in the identification of problems, justification of perspectives and development of scientific and practical recommendations for improving the current corporate social responsibility practices in

the interests of sustainable development of economic systems. It is expedient to place special emphasis on emerging economies.
