Original papers covering materials used in construction and civil engineering.

eISSN: 1747-6518

Aims and scope

Construction Materials seeks to publish original research and practice papers of the highest quality on any kind of materials used in construction and civil engineering.

All aspects of a material's life are addressed including embodied energy, environmental impact, service life, refurbishment, recycling and reuse.

Papers are particularly sought in the areas where construction materials are used in or close to their real application that demonstrates to a larger community what is potentially possible. Also, papers that provide knowledge and insight that can be used beyond the range of specimens that have been investigated in the lab are highly encouraged.

Award-winning papers

Each year, the paper rated best by the Editorial Panel is given the ICE's Howard Medal.

This medal was instituted in 1872 following a bequest made to the Institution by Thomas Howard (1796-1872), Assoc. ICE, who carried out investigations in connection with steam and wrought iron.

The income from the endowment fund is used to provide a medal, originally every 4 years, to the author of a Paper on any of the uses or properties of iron or steel or associated process development, such author being a Corporate Member or an Associate Member or Student of the Institution.

Each year we award authors from both industry and academia who have produced work judged by their peers to be of exceptional quality and benefit to the civil engineering, construction and materials science community. Papers outside of our archive (published after 2002) are free to read here in perpetuity as part of our commitment to furthering knowledge and best practice.
