A leader in innovative publishing technology, Silverchair shares our dedication to responsible publishing and together we seek to broaden participation; engage new audiences and make research more accessible and usable.
Please find below some FAQ’s about the refreshed Emerald Insight.
Ready for launch questions
1. When did the new platform launch?
The platform launched on 21 July 2025.
2. Is the URL different?
The primary URL for Emerald Insight remains www.emerald.com/insight. Other URLs across the Emerald Insight platform have potentially updated depending on the page; the ICE Publishing Virtual Library links have all updated to emerald.com URLs. However, we have key redirects in place from both platforms to ensure automatic redirection to the new platform for a period of time. These will be phased out over time but we will ensure sufficient time to support transition.
3. Can I access all the same content that I could on the previous platforms?
All Emerald Publishing Journal, Book and Case content that was available on the previous Insight platform has been migrated. All ICE Publishing content previously accessed on ICE Virtual Library has been migrated to the new Emerald Insight platform, and previous links automatically redirect. If you held accounts on each previous platform, they have been consolidated into a single account. Your access entitlements will remain the same.
4.Will my login details remain the same?
If you have not yet logged in to the new platform, you will need to reset your password, which can be done at: www.emerald.com/my-account/reset-password.
5. Is the site compatible with mobile devices?
Yes, the new site is mobile compatible.
6. What are the key new features of the platform?
The new Emerald Insight offers a variety of new features including:
- Sustainability and accessibility enhancements through optimised use of colour, images, graphics, and vectors to support improved user journeys, more detailed filtering, and faster page load times. These changes not only benefit readers but reduce carbon usage, positively impacting our planet.
- Split View: A dual panel view displaying figures and additional data alongside the article.
- Simplified Research Pass user experience for utilising tokens across book chapters and journal articles.
- Collection pages offering the option to curate diverse content across products and fields, or within the products you have access to, facilitating deeper discovery.
We have produced a short video outlining some of the key new features: https://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/how-to/librarians/toolkit/promote-your-emerald-insight-content
8. Have Journal homepages changed?
Each journal has a dedicated page on Emerald Insight, comprising editorial contacts; journal overview; top accessed and top cited articles; newly published articles and direct links to submit. Journal homepages also now consolidate historic instances of a renamed title into one place, providing a comprehensive archive of content.
9. Are there any minimum technical specifications required to access the new site? If so, what are these?
Emerald Insight is available via the current versions of modern browsers. We ask that you ensure that you are not on a discontinued browser.
10. What do I need to do to maintain my access to Emerald Insight?
All existing profiles on Emerald Insight and ICE Publishing Virtual Library have migrated over to the new platform and if you have a profile on each platform, will be consolidated. If you have not logged in to the new platform yet, you will need to reset your password which can be done at: www.emerald.com/my-account/reset-password.
11. Will you run training sessions on the new platform?
We'll be providing an overview videos for the new platform- these will be available on our toolkit page here: https://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/how-to/librarians/toolkit/promote-your-emerald-insight-content
12. Where do I direct my general enquiries?

2. We harvest usage data via SUSHI harvesting, will this change of platform change the SUSHI URL? If so, will our SUSHI credentials change too?
Yes, SUSHI URLs have changed. The new details are https://sitemaster.emerald.com//sushi/r51 to access COUNTER 5.1 reports and https://sitemaster.emerald.com//sushi/ for COUNTER 5. These links are available directly via our administration portal (https://sitemaster.emerald.com/admin/login.aspx), on the tabs for COUNTER and you can follow the report specific links to SUSHI.
Logins – All registered Account Administrators will have access to their SUSHI credentials via the new Institutional Admin Portal: https://sitemaster.emerald.com/admin/login.aspx. When you click on the link to access SUSHI via our administrator portal, the pop-up screen is dynamic, and it will generate the needed details you as a logged in user, and in the format you should use. You will be provided with a Customer ID which is related to your institution, and then a requestor ID and requestor API key that are unique to you as a user. If you use a SUSHI harvester, you can add these details into your tool.
3. Are there changes to authentication?
All existing standard authentication methods and access from the previous Emerald Insight and the ICE Publishing Virtual Library have migrated to the new platform, alongside your live and historical holdings. Assuming there are no changes to IP, Shibboleth and OpenAthens, your authentication via those methods should continue to work. If you have any changes that you have not yet communicated to us or want to add a new authentication method, please email [email protected].
Changes to Organisation Access Number Authentication: Please note if your users were authenticating via an Organisation Access Number, they have been migrated across as affiliated users for 90 days from 21 July 2025. Any users who should no longer have access or any new users will need to be updated via the new guidelines for manual affiliation, which are available here: https://emeraldpublishinggroup.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/36000574055. If your users are able to facilitate an automatic affiliation whilst logged in to their personal profile (i.e. IP, OpenAthens), they will be granted access for 90 days, which will be extended each time they automatically affiliate. However, if you need to support off campus access for an extended period of time, we recommend that you review the affiliated users list and update the end dates of the users as you need (i.e. if you want to extend these to the end of the calendar year or align this to the academic year you can do so).
4. How will COUNTER reporting be impacted?
We will continue to follow the COUNTER compliance guidelines and maintain a minimum of the current year plus the prior 24 months of usage data via the Institutional Administrator Dashboard.
COUNTER reports for July 2025: As July 2025 COUNTER R5.1 stats will stem from three platforms there will be a set of reports from each (the retired Insight, the ICE Virtual Library and the new Insight) and there will be a slight delay in obtaining July’s R 5.1 COUNTER reports. We anticipate that the complete R5.1 COUNTER data from July from the retiring platforms will be available from September via the Institutional Administrator Dashboard.
Historic COUNTER reports: We anticipate that historic COUNTER reports from Emerald Insight and ICE Virtual Library will be available to you from September via the Administrators Portal.
5. Does the new Emerald Insight support MS Azure AD?
We are able to support MS Azure AD on the new Emerald Insight. If you wish to utilise this authentication method, please reach out to us at [email protected] so that we can work with you to gather the necessary information and support your implementation.
6. Should we expect to see a drop in usage after launch?
We are monitoring usage patterns across the entire platform to ensure that we don’t experience any reduction in our anticipated usage. All routes into the platform have been updated and supported as required, including SEO and discovery services. We will be working hard to minimise any negative impact on usage. Should you notice any unfortunate impact to your usage, please reach out to us so that we can complete an institutional health check and assess if there are any issues that need to be resolved.
7. Will I be able to access the Account Management Portal on the refreshed platform?
There is a new Institutional Administrator Dashboard on the new platform which you can access here: https://sitemaster.emerald.com/admin/login.aspx.
Your existing licenses, products and administrative accounts from both Emerald Insight and ICE Publishing Virtual Library are now consolidated into a single account. Please note that upon logging in for the first time after launch, you will be required to reset your password, which can be done at: www.emerald.com/my-account/reset-password.
8. What institutional AIP (access in perpetuity) will I receive as part of my journal subscriptions?
You will retain AIP to the years in which you subscribe or have subscribed to back to the year 2000.
9. Are there any changes to Research Pass access?
There is an improved user experience for Research Pass, making it simpler for your faculty to spend tokens. Your Research Pass will now include content from both Emerald and ICE Publishing. We have credited all current Research Pass accounts back to a full pack of tokens at no additional cost, with the same expiry date as your original tokens.
10. Are there any changes to eBook Select processes?
If you have an active EBA, you will now have access to all content in the Emerald and ICE Publishing eBook portfolios. If you are making your selection prior to 31st July, please make your selection via spreadsheet as per the current process. If you are making your selection from 1st August, selections will be made on site via a token pack. Guidance on how to do this will be available on the customer support portal.
11. Will you continue to support Discovery Services?
EBSCO: For the Knowledge Base (powering holds and linking service, HLM) customers do not need to make any changes. All changes EBSCO make will flow through to customer accounts.
Clarivate/Ex Libris (Primo, Summon, Alma, SFX): No action needed
WorldCat: We have been advised that no action is needed for customers to maintain access.
Additional Discovery Services are continued to be supported.
12. Will there be any changes to MARC and KBART?
The URLs in our KBART files are changing. We will be updating historical KBART files on our website for historical content but moving forward new KBART files will be added in the administrator portal. We recommend customers update links, however we will have redirects in place so there is no immediate urgency on this. For MARC files, we made changes in June 2024 so anything you have downloaded since then remains up to date to use. For any historical records, you may wish to download new versions from our MARC records page to ensure that you have the most up to date URLs.
Author/editor/reviewer questions
1. As an author / editor / reviewer, what will happen to the access I receive on the platform as part of my engagement with you?
Journal author/editor persistent access records: any existing author persistent access records have been migrated and now display within the ‘My Subscriptions’ area of your profile, with any future records to be added to your ‘Author Dashboard’. If you currently have active complimentary access tokens on your profile, these have also been migrated.
Book author/editor persistent access records: any existing author persistent access records have been migrated and now display within the ‘My Subscriptions’ area of your profile, with any future records to be added to your ‘Author Dashboard’. If your title has been published during 2025, there may be a short delay whilst we migrate this data over, but we anticipate this to be complete by September 2025. If you currently have active complimentary access tokens on your profile, these have also been migrated.
2. Should I let my authors, editorial team and reviewers know about the change to a new platform and how it’ll affect them?
We have communicated all of the changes with all authors, editors and reviewers so your colleagues should also be aware of the change to the platform. However, do feel free to discuss the change and let us know of any questions that you or they may have.
3. Do you expect to see a change in usage patterns for my journal/article?
We are monitoring usage patterns across the entire platform before, during and after launch to ensure that we don’t experience any reduction in our anticipated usage. We have ensured that all associated routes into the platform are updated and supported as required, including SEO and discovery services.
4. I recently published my article with Emerald and had provided my ORCID during the submission process. Will my ORCID link appear with my article on the new platform?
Yes, ORCID is utilised on the new Insight platform and links out to the relevant ORCID author profiles will be available where we have the information available.
5. Will there be changes to my publication URL?
There will be some URL changes to content based on the new site structure. Wherever possible, there will be redirects in place, but we recommend you check URL's to your published work and update accordingly.
End-user questions
1. Will my current TOC alerts be saved?
Journal Alerts: Journal alerts associated with an Emerald Insight or ICE Publishing Virtual Library profile are being migrated over and will restart from September 2025. If you prefer to ensure uninterrupted access to your journal alerts, you can continue to receive them by signing up again here: https://www.emerald.com/my-account/alerts.
Please note that previously named “TOC Alerts” from Insight and “email alerts” from ICE Virtual Library will now become “Closed Issue Alerts”.
Book Alerts: Book Alerts associated with an Emerald Insight profile or ICE Virtual Library profile will not be migrated over to the refreshed platform. Book alerts can be set up here: https://www.emerald.com/my-account/alerts.
2. Will ICE members still be able access to ICE Publishing content?
The ICE is upgrading its membership management system in Summer 2025, meaning that if you are an ICE member, you will not be able to access ICE Publishing content related to your individual membership provision on the new Emerald Insight platform until the new ICE membership management system has launched. However, you will be able to continue to access ICE Publishing content if your organisation has its own subscription. Once the ICE has launched its new membership management system ICE members will once again be able to access ICE Publishing content on Emerald Insight after re-registering their MyICE account. You can find more information about this on the ICE website.
General questions
1. Why are you moving to a new platform?
We want to provide the best academic publishing experience possible. To do that, we need to offer the best-in-class technology available to ensure authors’ research receives the deserved exposure; our journals, books, and case studies are easily discoverable and accessible to readers, and our customers will benefit from all Emerald and ICE Publishing content being on one platform. Moving Emerald Insight to the Silverchair platform provides more accessible and consistent features to remain safe and secure. We’ll still be making the key decisions on user experience, content presentation, navigation, and discovery. Emerald will still be the driving force behind what we do with our content, while benefiting from the advanced technology Silverchair can provide.
2. Why are you partnering with a vendor rather than developing the new Emerald Insight internally?
Being part of a development community offers easier alignment with industry standards around security, stability and accessibility, whilst enabling Emerald teams to focus on user experience and feature development; and to identify the areas where we can add most value to the end to end publishing process.
3. How has customer feedback informed the new platform?
One of the main reasons for the migration is to ensure our content platform is the best it can be for all users. We’ve taken on board all of the feedback, pain points and challenges that we’ve received on our current platform to guide decisions on the new platform.
4. Will there be any further developments to the platform after it’s launched?
Yes, there will be continuous development on the platform. Being part of the Silverchair community means we will benefit from developments that are made for the platform as a whole – ensuring we are always up to date with industry expectations on security, stability, authentication, SEO and accessibility. In addition, we will continuously use customer interactions and feedback to evolve the platform and improve user experience.
5. Will the new site meet global accessibility standards?
We are committed to ensuring our content is accessible.
The Silverchair platform targets WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance and work continues to ensure that the standard is maintained and continually improved on as the guidelines change.
However, platform accessibility is only part of the story and we are also working to improve our content accessibility as part of the platform migration. We’ve extended the titles that will have ePub available and for content published from the end of June 2025 our content will include alt text and meet ePub3 accessibility requirements.
