Decentring the human in qualitative research: Exploring diverse approaches by creating online communities

Closes:
Submission deadline date: 2 March 2025

Introduction

This special issue emerged from the Australian Association for Research in Education Qualitative Research Methodologies Special Interest Group Seminar Series on Decentring the Human in Qualitative Research (click here for more information). This seminar series was inspired by Kuby and Bozalek’s 2023 webinars about post-philosophies and initially welcomed Australian researchers but quickly expanded to include international presenters and audiences from countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom and Sweden.

Building on the success of the seminar series, we now invite contributions on the topic of decentring the human in qualitative research from interested researchers and scholars for a special issue of the Qualitative Research Journal.

Scholars are invited to submit original research, reviews, and philosophical papers that address key themes of decentring the human in qualitative research, and delve into topics relating to the challenges and opportunities that decentring the human creates for researchers, including but not limited to:

  • Decentring the human as a qualitative research concern
  • Decentring the human and literacy education
  • Decentring the human and environmental education
  • Arts-based methods for decentring the human
  • Decentring the human without being posthuman
  • Decentring the human: thinking like a network
  • Decentring the human and early childhood education
  • The future of decentring the human in qualitative research

Interdisciplinary scholars are especially encouraged to consider submitting an article to highlight the work of theorists and philosophers other than those who often dominate specific disciplinary discussions on the topic (such as Deleuze and Guattari in the discipline of early childhood education). This cross-pollination will create new possibilities for thinking about and doing qualitative inquiry in the future.

Prospective authors are encouraged to reach out to the guest editors before the submission deadline to assess the alignment of their work with the scope of this Special Issue. We look forward to your contributions.
