Our stance on impact
We refer to impact as the provable effects of research in the real world. We launched Real Impact to call on research communities to come together and break down barriers.
Read more about our manifesto for change and how we demonstrate our commitment to impact through our research, products, blogs and case studies and our Real Impact Awards.
Our stance on open
We’re passionate about opening new pathways to impact and helping researchers make their findings open to all. Telling the story of their impactful research is essential for our authors and openness plays a vital part in making it happen. We want to work with our communities to create a research landscape where the ‘door is open’ for different content, modern approaches and unexplored subjects. This is essential if open publishing is to reach its true potential.
With this in mind we have created a number of open research routes that give authors the choice and flexibility when publishing their findings. From our zero-embargo policy on green open access to our gold and platinum routes. Our innovative open platform, Emerald Open Research, offers six gateways aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The publishing platform gives audiences beyond academia – be it policymakers, practitioners or the general public – quick and easy access to research that can create positive change for us all.
“By choosing to adopt our revolutionary open research publishing model, we are enabling authors to share their research rapidly and transparently in ways that support research integrity and reproducibility. We have taken a pioneering stance, for the benefit of authors, readers, and society as a whole.”

Our commitment
Being a responsible business is at the heart of everything we do. We believe in taking responsibility and working collaboratively with our partners, communities and colleagues to make a positive impact on a local and global scale.

Our stance on DORA
In February 2019 we were one of the first publishers to sign up to DORA, the Declaration on Research Assessment, supporting its vision. A core thrust of DORA is that journal-based metrics are often misused and ill applied in research and researcher evaluation. Signing DORA is a natural extension to Emerald’s commitment to driving positive change, working in partnership with communities across and beyond the research ecosystem.

UN Sustainable Development Goals Publishers Compact
We are delighted to be a founding signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) Publishers Compact, which is designed to inspire action among publishers, and accelerate progress to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This makes a clear commitment to the underlying principles of developing sustainable practices and acting as champion of the SDGs during the Decade of Action (2020–2030), publishing content that will help inform, develop and inspire action in that direction. We have long sought to challenge the status quo in the market; thinking differently about our content programme and creating new impact barometers that more accurately reflected the modern research era.
Our commitment extends to commissioning a broader range of research outputs, moving ‘beyond the journal’ and recognising that ‘research is not article shaped’. Working with our communities, we will discover and experiment with new forms of digital content to help researchers better tell the story of their work. Our aim is to contribute to the development of new best practices to help members of the community learn from each other and create positive change.
