2024 Emerald South Asia LIS Research Fund Award

Supporting library & information science research

Call for library and information science research proposals from South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, or Sri Lanka). Emerald is delighted to offer a research grant for a proposal in the field of library and information science research. Applications should address the dissemination of knowledge with a specific orientation toward benefit for countries mentioned under section “Eligibility.”

There will be one award of £2,000 (before taxes) for the winning research proposal, to fund or part-fund these projects. In addition to the research fund, it is also expected that the findings of the research will be submitted for publication (subject to review) in one of Emerald’s many excellent library and information studies titles.

Eligibility

The corresponding author of the research team must be based in any of the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, or Sri Lanka.

Important note about the eligibility Criteria:

In adherence to our company's internal regional structure, 'The Emerald South Asia LIS Research Fund Award’ is exclusively open to researchers from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives.

We encourage participants from other countries to explore competitions launched by Emerald Publishing regional teams specific to their respective regions. You can find details on our other regional awards further down this page.

Things to remember:

  1. Do not include any personal information in the proposal document
  2. Word count: 2000 words maximum
  3. Figures, tables, and references are excluded from the word count.

Judging criteria

Each application will be judged, by a panel of experts, on the criteria below. The research must:

  • Be of significance and illustrate how it will benefit the LIS community in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, or Sri Lanka.  
  • Demonstrate originality and innovation.
  • Make an outstanding contribution to theory and its application.
  • Illustrate the appropriateness and application of the methodology.
  • Demonstrate sound implications for theory and practice.

Proposals will be rejected if:

  • Do not include personal information (name, affiliation, email, etc.) in the proposal document. This information is collected during registration. Proposals with personal details will be automatically rejected to ensure a double-blind peer review.
  • Proposals exceeding 2,000 words or incomplete submissions will be automatically rejected. Figures and tables do not count towards the word limit.

Eligibility

The applicant must be a citizen or currently doing research in one of the following countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. The applicant must be in the early stage of their research career with no age limitation.

Judging criteria

Each application will be judged by a panel of experts, on the criteria below. The judges will be from Emerald and senior researchers from various disciplines. The young researcher must:

  • Be a citizen in the stated region/reside (study or work) in the stated region;
  • Demonstrate originality and contribution in research and/or practice;
  • Illustrate how the applicant has impacted the society or the community concerned;
  • Have publication in any journal(s) in Emerald;
  • A recommendation letter from one relevant and notable individual (i.e. a leading figure).

Application requirements

Each write-up must be submitted using the online application form.
The following documents will be required electronically:

  • A summary stating specific effort(s) or activity(ies) and the outcomes or impact it has made. This should not exceed 2,000 words (note that tables, figures, appendices and reference lists, if provided, do NOT count towards the 2,000 word total).
  • A covering letter containing full contact details (affiliation, full address, telephone number and email address) of the individual.
  • PDF of the published article in Emerald or letter of acceptance indicating that the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Publication period from 1st January 2019 to 30 September 2021.
  • A recommendation letter from the notable individual with his/her full contact details.

The 2,000-word summary must:

  • Display clearly the nature and purpose of the effort/activity and the details about the success;
  • Describe the process involved and the impact it has made. Success/process which is ongoing is also welcome;
  • State the impact it has made/is making and the future plans.

Why is this award not open to every country in the world?

This is a regional award which takes initiative in regional bases to encourage researchers who are citizens or currently doing research in one of the following countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos.

Will I receive updates on my application?

Emerald African Management Research Fund Award

Emerald and the Africa Academy of Management (AFAM), in association with INASP and the International Academy of African Business and Development (IAABD), are delighted to offer a research grant for an African project in the field of management research. The award will offer £2,500 (approximately US$4,000 equivalent) to fund the winning research project.

Submissions have been closed. Judging is in progress.
 

At least one member of the research team must be based in Africa.

Each application will be judged, by a panel of experts, on the criteria below. The research must:

  • Be of significance, and in particular, illustrate how it will benefit the social good
  • Demonstrate originality and innovation
  • Make an outstanding contribution to theory and its application
  • Illustrate the appropriateness and application of the methodology
  • Demonstrate sound implications for theory and practice

Each proposal must be submitted using the online application form.

The following documents will be required electronically:

  • A summary stating specific goals, outcomes and benefits of the research. This should not exceed 2,000 words (note that tables, figures, appendices and reference lists if provided do NOT count towards the 2,000 word total).
  • A covering letter containing full contact details (affiliation, full address, telephone number/s and email address) for all researchers involved in the project. Please state clearly which researcher will be the main point of contact.

The 2,000 word summary must:

  • Display clearly a statement of purpose and intent
  • State clearly the methodology(ies) applied and explicitly describe the research process
  • State expected research outcomes and expected impact and possible application
  • Specify the expected timescales of the research process
  • Outline projected costs and total research grant required
