The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting public health interventions such as mobility restrictions and lockdowns have presented unprecedented challenges to nearly every aspect of agricultural and development economics. The existing literature has discussed the potential consequences of the COVID-19, such as disrupting food security, agricultural production, economic development, and much more. A growing body of studies have also provided an early assessment of the immediate and short-run impact of COVID-19 on the food and agricultural industry and the economic wellbeing of households in emerging economies. These timely studies provide important implications for policy aiming at mitigating the COVID-induced shocks.

The COVID-19 is expected to continue disrupting the agricultural market and causing significant economic hardship in the near future. While there have been some encouraging results of COVID-19 vaccine efficacy, the effectiveness of the vaccine needs further assessment over time and the outlook for economic recovery is likely to remain slow and uncertain. The recovery progress in developing countries can be even slower as they are likely to have access to vaccine at a much later time. This suggests continued efforts are needed to adapt to and to alleviate the long-run impacts of the pandemic.

This special issue calls for contributions expanding existing knowledge on the impact of COVID-19 and providing guidance on how public policy can enhance the adaptation of agriculture and developing countries to COVID-19. We are inviting submissions of solid economic analysis focused on issues related to COVID-19 in the areas of agricultural and development economics. The themes of special issues include (but not limited to): agricultural and food industry, agricultural trade, food security, poverty, risk management and adaptation.
