Managing inequalities through a pandemic:  The place of opportunities, disadvantage and inclusion amid COVID-19   

A special issue of

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal

In this special issue of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion: An International Journal we are seeking research papers that address issues of inequality during the pandemic.  We invite research papers from a broad range of subjects and fields that can speak to the experiences, broader policy changes and the management of inequalities and opportunities under pandemic governance.  The research content itself need not deal specifically with COVID-19, but the paper should relate findings to the theme of the special issue.  

We welcome submissions to this special issue. Topics covered include (but are not limited to):


  • The economic inequalities that will emerge or are further during pandemic governance, especially in terms of vulnerable populations, low-paying workers, migrant workers, and racialized groups.
  • How stigma and racial inequalities manifest during the pandemic, and how society has normalized certain racialized behaviours during this time.
  • How the pandemic furthers gender dynamics, globally, especially in terms of women’s unpaid labours and their place on the frontlines of health care services around the world.
  • The experience of pandemic governance and inequality within indigenous communities.
  • How lock-downs and disruption to movement, trade, and private-sector enterprise impact poorer, or marginalized communities in the Global South. 
  • The impacts of high-level governance during the pandemic in terms of the consequences of misinformation, division, and partisanship.
  • The capabilities of emergency management readiness during the pandemic, especially in terms of preparedness and resilience for potential climate-change related emergencies.  
  • Equality management strategies from within the health systems, and health service planning.
  • How inequalities will form, and along what lines, during a post-COVID-19 economic recovery.
  • Challenges and ethics of new care and notions of solidarity locally and globally.
  • The place of civil rights & individual freedoms during pandemic governance, and the role of the state after the crisis subsides.
  • Unorthodox responses to the pandemic and lessons learned from unprecedented measures.

These topics, and others, are welcomed for the special issue.  Submissions should be original work that can be empirical research, theory development, and critical literature reviews.  

Deadline and Submission Details

The submission deadline for all papers is September 1, 2020. Papers will undergo a double-blind peer review.  Final acceptance will be dependent upon the editor’s judgement of the paper and the reviewer’s feedback.
