General points
- Videos will be checked before they can be published; please get in touch with your contact for information about brand guidelines.
- Please do not use proprietary video creation websites as this limits options for using video assets such as stock footage and audio in future projects.
- Web and email addresses are not active or selectable within videos. Viewers are unlikely to pause the video and note down addresses. Unless the address is a key part of the campaign message, it is more useful to supply these within the post on social media or in the video description.
- Please ensure any content has been through any necessary approval stages, has been circulated amongst all stakeholders and is finalised before including it in your video.
- If your video has embedded content, then please supply it as a plain text file along with the video (for accessibility).
- Make sure that you own or have permission to use any content within the video.
Filming
- Please film in landscape, in colour and without filters.
- Check device is set to record at the highest quality possible – phones usually have better cameras than laptops.
- Please think about where filming is taking place. Try to film in a well-lit, un-cluttered space and minimise how much background is visible.
- Try to position the camera so that it is level with the eyes and not filming from below or above.
- Handheld footage can be suitable for more informal content such as social media posts. If you are filming for more formal items such as question and answer sessions or book abstracts, please place your device on a flat, steady surface that is not likely to be knocked during recording. There are many kinds of affordable stand, tripod and holder available for different devices that may also be worth considering.
- Please try to look into the device lens while filming. This will give the effect of eye contact and result in a better experience for the viewer. This may be difficult if it is offset from the screen and you require notes while filming. Try to orient the screen so the camera is directly in front of you, or consider printing notes out and positioning them in a way that will enable you to look at the camera as easily as possible.
- If possible, use a microphone to capture audio. Built-in laptop microphones can be poor quality, and will pick up unwanted sounds and reverberations from echoey rooms. Clip-on lavalier microphones for your device can be obtained relatively cheaply – otherwise you may have headphones to hand which include a microphone attached to the cable (You do not need to wear the headphones while filming). Try not to knock or brush the microphone while you are filming as this will result in loud sounds being heard on the footage.

- Check that all of the subject’s head is in shot and not cropped at the top
- Ensure subject is lit from the front but avoid harsh lighting which may cause glare on glasses, overexposed footage or strong shadows.
- Turn off audio notifications on laptops or mobiles as these can be audible on the recording.
