Since the early 2000s, emerging markets have become the heart of global supply chains hosting a large volume of industrial productions. Being the upstream suppliers in global supply chains, emerging markets are likely to encounter greater risks at uncertain times (Alvarado-Vargas & Kelley, 2020). Supply chain disruption in these markets can adversely affect the firms that outsource to them or countries that rely on the import of goods. The economy of emerging markets can be slowed down too due to supply chain disruptions leading to increasing unemployment and reduced quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected emerging markets more negatively than developed markets (Harjoto & Rossi, 2021). Government imposed lockdowns, travel restrictions, the shutdown of production plants etc., disrupted their supply chains. Nearly all manufacturing functions are disturbed, as too are their supply chains spanning around the world, including emerging markets (Karmaker et al., 2020; Shahed et al., 2021). As a response to the disruption, manufacturing firms have been re-engineering their supply chains (Belhadi et al., 2021; Chowdhury, Paul, Kaisar, & Moktadir, 2021). Disruption mitigation measures include developing local suppliers, increasing collaboration through digital technologies, ensuring social distancing at manufacturing plants and offices, and offering favourable terms to buyers, among others (Munim, Mohammadi, Shakil, & Ali, 2021). Moreover, manufacturing firms in the context of emerging markets are likely to face severe post COVID-19 challenges (Chowdhury et al., 2020). To deal with the post COVID-19 challenges, it is essential to understand the effect of the recent outbreak of COVID-19 on supply chains and strategies taken by firms to overcome the challenges.

In emerging markets, sustainable supply chain management considering technological advancement may act as a potential solution to business firms. Real-time data from various sources such as social media, business websites etc., can help tackle the worst situations of the COVID-19 pandemic. During COVID-19 pandemic times, manufacturing firms are facing huge pressure to ensure the sustainability of the supply chains, and many manufacturing firms might be forced to shut down business due to market failure and/or financial loss. However, research examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the post COVID-19 impact in an emerging market still remains scant. Hence, we call for expanding the theoretical and practical knowledge considering supply chain management in emerging markets.

The main objectives of this call are twofold. First, it will enrich the literature of the COVID-19 pandemic, considering the sustainability of the supply chains in an emerging economy context. We seek scientifically sound theories and models that ensure the sustainability of the supply chain in emerging market contexts during the pandemic. Second, we seek manuscripts with practical implications for the industry that address supply chain challenges after the COVID-19 pandemic.  


Possible Topics

To attain the overreaching objectives, this Special Issue will assist industrial practitioners and researchers think about COVID-19 and sustainability in emerging markets. Scholars are invited to submit original manuscripts from a diverse range of methodological, theoretical, and empirical studies considering the COVID-19 pandemic and sustainability of the supply chain.  Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • What are the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sustainability of the supply chains in emerging markets?
  • What are the strategies that can help industrial managers overcome these impacts during/post COVID-19 in emerging markets?
  • How can economic, social and environmental sustainability be ensured during and post COVID-19 in emerging markets?
  • What are the key business strategies in reducing post COVID-19 impacts on business activities in emerging markets?
  • What are the key benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Additives manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 technologies to ensure the continuity of manufacturing during and post COVID-19 in emerging markets?
  • What are the key drivers that can minimize the post COVID-19 pandemic impacts on business firms in emerging markets?
  • How do industrial decision-makers and policymakers manage health hygiene during manufacturing to ensure the sustainability of the supply chain in the COVID-19 context in emerging markets?
  • How can the rebuilding or restructuring of supply chain activities contribute to ensure the sustainability of the supply chain during and post COVID-19 in emerging markets?
  • How do big data analytics reduce the impact of COVID-19 in emerging markets?
  • What are the key roles of industrial decision-makers or practitioners to ensure sustainability in the COVID-19 context in emerging markets?
  • How does the real-time monitoring of the market data help achieve sustainability of the supply chain in emerging markets?
  • How do advanced technologies help business firms in emerging markets to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic?


Submissions Instructions

Authors should refer to the International Journal of Emerging Markets author guidelines for submission instructions. Submission to the special issue opens on September 10, 2021 and closes on January 15, 2022. Please submit through the journal online submission portal. Upon submission, please indicate that your submission is for this special issue.

Dr. Syed Mithun Ali is a Professor in the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering in the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He was awarded the Forum 86 Research Excellence Award’ 2021 for his contributions in the field of sustainable supply chains.  He has published more than 70 articles in top-tier journals including the Journal of Cleaner Production, International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, International Journal of Production Research, Sustainable Production and Consumption, Industrial Management and Data Systems, Computers and Industrial Engineering, Annals of Operations Research, Energy and so on. His current research interest includes logistics and supply chain management and supply chain risk management and tying that to supply chain sustainability and circular economy.

Dr. Charbel Jose Chiappetta Jabbour is currently a Global Chair at Lincoln International Business School (UK). He has been PI of a UK-Midlands Engine funded project (2020-2021), and Co-I of a large-scale Innovate UK (2021) on the nexus of sustainability of supply chains and digital transformation of organizations. He was included in the Stanford University's ranking of the 2% most cited scientists globally (2020). He is amongst the Top 10 most prolific researchers in 'Green Supply Chain Management' worldwide, according to SCOPUS (September 2020).

Dr. Sanjoy Kumar Paul is currently working as a Senior Lecturer in operations and supply chain management at UTS Business School. He has published more than 70 articles in top-tier journals and conferences including European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Economics, Computers and Operations Research, International Journal of Production Research, Annals of Operations Research, Journal of Cleaner Production, Computers and Industrial Engineering, Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing and so on. He is also an active reviewer of many reputed journals. His research interest includes supply chain risk management, modelling, applied operations research, and intelligent decision making. 

Dr. Ziaul Haque Munim is Associate Professor of Maritime Logistics at the Faculty of Technology, Natural and Maritime Sciences at the University of South-Eastern Norway. His main research interests include maritime logistics, supply chain management, forecasting and research methods. He holds a PhD degree from the University of Agder and MSc degree from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. His publications have appeared in leading journals such as the Journal of Business Research, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Resources, Conservation & Recycling, Journal of Cleaner Production and others. He received the Palgrave Macmillan Best Paper Award at the IAME 2016 in Hamburg and the KLU Young Researcher Best Paper Award at the IAME 2018 in Mombasa.
