Introduction
Integrating knowledge derived from research at the intersection of architecture and neuroscience is beginning to transform architectural design methodologies and outcomes. This special issue on Neuroarchitecture brings together contributions on how the built environment influences cognition, mood, or behaviour, while also reflecting on how Neuroarchitectural insights hold potential to reshape architectural theory and practice, as well as advance scientific research.
The issue explores how design informed by Neuroarchitectural knowledge can result in spaces that promote health, foster wellbeing, examine different aspects of performance, enhance cognitive function, or improve mood, to elevate inhabitant experience in built environments across scales, ranging from urban spaces to interior design.
Contributions can centre on all types of research and practical application. They might focus on, for example:
- Empirical work examining specific aspects of spatial design or use in relation to physiology or psychology
- Case studies of successful implementations of Neuroarchitecture principles in ‘real-world’ projects to offer practical insights
- Critical, theoretical perspectives that scrutinise philosophical or ethical implications of Neuroarchitecture as an emerging field
- Paradigm shifts driven by advancements in technology and neuroscience and their potential to transform both architectural and scientific theory and practice and lead to novel and adaptive frameworks
- Examinations of historical developments in both architecture and cognitive science and how they have led to the emergence of Neuroarchitecture.
Submissions are encouraged from, but not limited to, architects, designers, neuroscientists, psychologists, historians, or philosophers.
