Municipal Engineer is planning a themed issue on Infrastructure Planning to Accommodate Autonomous Mobility Systems
Introduction
Autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies are set to revolutionize the future of mobility, demanding not only the transformation of transportation systems but also the reimagining of the built environment to accommodate this shift. As AVs gain prominence, their integration with urban infrastructure poses significant challenges for civil engineering and construction disciplines. These challenges span from designing safer and more efficient road networks to creating sustainable systems that minimize environmental impact while meeting societal needs. This call for papers aims to inspire research at the intersection of infrastructure development and AV technology, focusing on the practicalities and innovations necessary for transitioning toward an AV-based mobility paradigm.
We aim to gather a diverse collection of studies, from theoretical models and simulation-based assessments to case studies and policy recommendations. By fostering collaboration between researchers, engineers, and urban planners and designers, this special issue seeks to provide actionable solutions for cities and regions transitioning toward AV-centric mobility systems.
Topics might include:
• Autonomous Systems for urban transport
• Communication systems such as V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) and V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure)
• Design of AV-ready roads
• Integration of AVs with existing infrastructure
• Urban Layouts for AV systems
• Construction methods for smart infrastructure
• Sustainability in AV infrastructure
• Infrastructure maintenance and resiliance for AV
• AI-aided urban design for AV
