Introduction

AI has been applied in areas, such as speech recognition, language translation, game simulation, and medical diagnosis (Feng and Law, 2021). Currently, AI is rapidly transforming the educational scene across contexts. Despite the growing focus on integrating AI skills in education (Karakose, 2024; Chen et al. 2020; Feng and Law, 2021), and the reference to how teachers leverage technology to enhance student learning experiences (Javaid et al., 2023; Chiu, 2021), there remains a gap in research regarding its application in school leadership (Kafa and Eteokleous, 2024; Fullan et al. 2023; Chiu, 2023). In the field of school leadership, AI has received relatively little attention, and the literature offering in-depth analysis of its intersection with leadership practices remains scarce (Mohebi, 2024; Fullan et al. 2023). Based on the aforementioned, through the contributions, this special issue will inform the field and support the evolving impact of AI in school leadership.

The special issue is related to UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, since it aims to improve school leadership by exploring AI into school organizations. By exploring how AI may be effectively used by school leaders, the topic addresses the need for innovation and capacity building in school leadership, which contributes directly to the objective of providing quality education for everyone.

List of Topic Areas

  • Potential benefits and challenges and general issues associated with the utilization of AI and related tools in school leadership.
  • The moral and ethical considerations associated with the implementation of AI in school leadership.
  • Exploring how the findings of this special use can inform school leadership training programs and supporting school leaders’ skills to lead within an AI-driven school environment.
  • Offering insights into how research findings can support education policy-making to enhance the readiness of school leaders to embrace AI and promote the development of school leadership frameworks for the responsible use of AI in school organizations.
