Digitisation

Closes:

The Editorial Panel of the Civil Engineering journal warmly invites authors to submit papers on the topic of the digitisation of the engineering industry.

Digitisation is crucial for future-proofing civil engineering, enabling smarter, more resilient infrastructure. Technologies like AI, digital twins, and IoT enhance adaptability, efficiency, and sustainability amid growing urbanisation and climate challenges. Real-time data and predictive analytics help optimise performance, reduce costs, and ensure infrastructure evolves with future advancements.

For civil engineers, digitisation presents an opportunity to improve asset management, streamline construction processes, and optimise resource use. By embracing these innovations, we can create smarter, more adaptive infrastructure that delivers lasting social and economic benefits.

We invite contributions that explore the challenges, opportunities, and emerging best practices in the digitisation of civil engineering.

Topics of interest include:

• AI/Machine learning-driven design
• Data driven engineering to
• Reduce carbon
• Reduce environmental impacts and emissions
• Implement circular economy
• Reduce waste
• Smart infrastructure
• Predictive maintenance
• Digital twins
• The role and importance of data in decision-making.
• The opportunities of new and emerging technology
• The barriers we face in digitising the industry
• What steps are needed for successful implementation of new technology.

Deadline for abstract submission: 2 June 2025 (click to open MS Form)

Deadline for Paper submission: 1 September 2025

Interested authors are recommended to first read the journal homepage Author guidelines (using the provided MS Word template).

Civil Engineering is the official Member journal of the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is indexed by Web of Science - SCIE and Scopus.

Submitted papers will be anonymously commented upon by other members of the civil engineering profession (peer review) – a process which maintains the high technical quality of the journal. Not all submitted papers are accepted.

Proposals should include article title, authors and 200 words outlining the scope of the paper.

ICE Publishing journals are committed to act as champions of the UN SDGs and to further the knowledge needed for them to be achieved in the civil engineering industry. You can find out more about them and our work towards meeting them in our UN SDG Resource Centre

If you have a question about the journal, writing, peer review or any of the above, please contact the Commissioning Editor Benjamin Ramster.
