Climate change and resulted phenomenon like the increases in frequency and intensity of floods, droughts and salinity intrusion have significant effects on agriculture and food production (Deschênes and Greenstone, 2007, Parry et al., 2007, Chavas et al., 2009, Nelson et al., 2009). With more extreme weather events, major river basins worldwide such as the Nile, Mekong, and Amazon demonstrate similar water security challenges that affect people’s livelihoods and reduce agricultural productivity (van Dam, 2003, Hamouda et al., 2009, Szabo. et al, 2016, Veilleux and Anderson, 2016). This is particularly the case of Mekong River basin where the economy depends heavily on agriculture (Nelson et al., 2009). The effects of climate change might undermine the ability of Asian countries to attain millennium development goals and achieve sustainable development. This suggests the need of structural transformations in the agriculture sector for enhancing their resilience to adapt to climate change impacts (Pelling, 2010, Park et al., 2012, Rickards and Howden, 2012, Renaud et al., 2015, Smajgl et al. 2015).

Existing literature on agriculture affected by climate change mainly focuses on the vulnerability of agriculture to climate change (Deschênes and Greenstone, 2007, Asseng et al., 2013, Challinor et al., 2014) and adaptation to climate variability (Smit and Skinner, 2002, Adger, 2003, Nelson et al., 2009, Reidsma et al., 2010). Emerging studies have addressed the adaptation mechanism which increases the resilience of agriculture to climate change given the climate risks (Pelling, 2010, Lin, 2011, Renaud et al., 2015). Agricultural adaptation involves developing a range of farm-level innovations to increase farm productivity, diversification of production systems, markets, institutional innovations, and policy reforms (Bouwer and Aerts, 2006, Nelson et al., 2009, Klerkx et al., 2010, Lin, 2011, Lybbert and Sumner, 2012). Yet there is limited intensive collections of linkages among economic aspects (such as cost/benefits, the value chain and supply chain, the horizontal and vertical integrations, financing mechanism, risk and risk management), and climate change adaptation, agricultural transformation, livelihood resilience to climate.

This special issue aims to provide insights of economic aspects in enhancing the resilience of agriculture to climate change in the Mekong River basin. Papers included in the issue will address the following (but not limited to) questions:

What are the potential climate-resilient agricultural livelihoods?

How do adaptation options contribute to livelihood sustainability?

What is the profitability of adaptation options?

What are the options for financing climate change adaptation?

What are potential economic risks for agricultural livelihoods and how to manage those risks?

How should value chains be (re)structured from local to international market?

How to integrate economic analysis in a trans-/inter-/multi-disciplinary agriculture research? 

We are inviting submissions that work on topics pertaining to economic analysis of agricultural adaptation options in the Mekong River basin. The themes of special issues include (but not limited to): sustainable agriculture, agribusiness, microfinance, value chain and supply chain, livelihood resilience, economic risk and risk management.

Special Issue timeline

Authors interested in engaging in a developmental conversation with the guest editors are welcome to send their extended abstracts before the submission of the full paper. A tentative timeline is reported below:

Full paper submission deadline: September 1st 2019
Publication of the Special issue: Scheduled as Volume 10, Issue 1 (2020)

Abstracts should be sent directly to the Guest Editors for discussion and development. These should not be submitted through ScholarOne, but sent via email to [email protected]. All full papers must be processed through ScholarOne Manuscripts, the dedicated peer review system used by the Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economies. The papers that are evaluated to be promising but not ready in time for the publication of the Special issue will receive a “Revise & Resubmit” advice for delayed publication in a regular issue of the journal, or a possible second volume of this Special issue, with further developmental comments from reviewers.
