Information
Sustainable tourism attempts to strike a balance between the economic, environmental and social-cultural benefits and the costs of tourism development (Rasoolimanesh & Jaafar, 2017). It aims to improve the quality of life of destination residents, while simultaneously trying to conserve the environment, nature, and heritage for future generations (Edgell, 2016). Tourism development can have both positive and negative economic, socio-cultural, environmental, technological, and political impacts on the destinations (Rasoolimanesh & Jaafar, 2017). Concerning the importance of these impacts, and to address the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approved by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, the year of 2017 was declared as the international year of sustainable tourism for development. Since this pronouncement, there has been a mobilization of research and projects to facilitate the achievement of SDGs through the channel of sustainable tourism. However, the functionality of the tourism and hospitality industries to facilitate sustainable development and contribute to the achievement of SDGs has been criticized by some scholars and practitioners (Higgins-Desbiolles, 2018).
Conversely, the tourism and hospitality industry has been influenced by the rapid development of information technology (IT) in the last few decades (Law, Buhalis, & Cobanoglu, 2014). The growth and transformational impact of IT as an integral part of tourism and hospitality is widely recognized as it has effectively connected tourists and tourism and hospitality businesses more than ever before (Buhalis & Law, 2008), and has influenced tourist behavior and destination development (Law et al., 2014).
Today we are seeing increasing engagement of these technologies to address sustainability issues. Given the key role of adoption and development of IT in achieving the SDGs and facilitating the sustainable development of tourism, there is a paucity of studies in this academic sphere. In fact, the application of technologies for managing the sustainable tourism development of destinations is one area, which has been very largely ignored, in the academic literature (Ali & Frew, 2014). Therefore, the current special issue aims to publish a collection of studies and good practices, which explore the contribution of adoption and development of IT in tourism and hospitality in achieving the SDGs.
A more explicit recognition of the role played by technologies in the sustainable development of tourism could offer new and exciting avenues for research. It would allow us to deepen our understanding of the requirements of the industry with regards to managing its sustainability and how we can implement and adopt technologies to help mitigate tourism's negative impacts.
