Special issue call for papers from International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation
Emerging Concepts in the application of BIM to the Alteration and Refurbishment Lifecycle of Buildings
Building refurbishment accounts for over 70% of construction work in the UK and most developed countries at the moment (Grimes et al, 2013). The need to adapt buildings and other structures to accommodate new uses and to upgrade building performance are major
reasons for alteration and refurbishment projects (Fernandez, 2011). Also, alteration and refurbishment projects would normally entail a significant amount of demolition, extension and modification activities – above and beneath ground. In some rare cases, and especially on the older stock, such works involve complete demolition and building up again as a new build project (Oloke, 2015). In either case, however, research continues to show that this trend is likely to continue in the foreseeable future as the industry continues to address the requirements of sustainable development (Thiemann, 2010).
This issue will consolidate on disseminated information on the subject matter to date, and will particularly welcome submissions from the following areas:
- General application of BIM to building refurbishment
- Exploration of project life cycle themes in the alteration and refurbishment of buildings using BIM
- Emerging trends in alteration and refurbishment of buildings
- Potential opportunities for the use of Smart systems and BIM in optimising the refurbishment process.
- New concepts in project management and related issues in alteration and refurbishment of buildings using BIM
- Case studies demonstrating innovation in BIM applications to alteration and refurbishment of buildings
- Ensuring sustainability health and safety and environmental management in alteration and refurbishment of buildings using BIM

- Planned publication date: March/ April 2019
