Special Issue on Franchise Performance

Special issue call for papers from International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management

Over the past 25 years, franchising has drawn the attention of many scholars from various business disciplines. This attention has been fuelled by the variety of the theoretical and empirical approaches of the franchise phenomenon which has been studied as a development strategy, a governance structure, an inter-organizational relationship or as an entrepreneurial format.

Most research has focused on the why and on the how questions: why do chains decide to operate through franchise units rather than through company-owned-units? How should chains be managed once they are in place? These two questions have led to an extent literature on why franchise units and company-owned-units coexist within a same franchise system (plural form franchising), why multi-unit franchising is the norm rather than the exception in many sectors, how franchisees behave compared to employee-managers, how franchisors organize the relationship with their franchisees, etc.

One question still understudied is the franchise performance one. On one side, “the continued existence of franchising is a priori testament to its efficiency" (Combs, Michael and Castrogiovanni, 2004, p. 916); on the other side, there is still little evidence whether franchising as an organizational form, as a retail format or as a governance structure positively affects economic or financial performance. 

The lack of public available data but also the reluctance of franchisors, franchisees and store managers to answer performance questions in surveys might explain the scarcity of studies on the topic. Another limitation in past research is the variety in performance metrics that limit the comparison of their results as well as their generalizability.

The aim of the special issue is to give new insights into the franchising performance question. The special issue will act as a forum for disseminating original, new and novel contribution to this research area.

Manuscripts focusing on the measure of the economic and/or financial performance of franchising are encouraged as are encouraged contributions revisiting prior research in the light of recent theory development. Cross-disciplinary as well as cross-country papers are also welcome.

Topics of the special issue may include (but are not limited to):

•    Franchise as a channel of distribution and performance
•    The link between franchisor and franchisee performance
•    Franchise contract characteristics and performance
•    “New” determinants of franchise performance
•    Non franchise firms versus franchise firms’ performance
•    Franchisors and/or franchisees profiles and/or entrepreneurial orientation and performance
•    Franchising as a governance structure and performance
•    Franchising as an inter-organizational relationship and performance
•    Plural form franchising and performance
•    Multi-unit franchising and performance
•    Supply chain issues in franchising and system performance
