Since its open-door policy in 1978, China’s economy has grown at a relentless pace. While this impressive economic growth has brought unprecedented wealth and prosperity to China, it has also created many economic, social, political, and cultural challenges in many industries including the tourism and hospitality industry. It is evident that the tourism and hospitality industry is a major force in the economy of China contributing 9.2% to the overall GDP of the country in 2011, and is forecasted to grow to 9.7% in 2012. It is also an industry that impacts upon the economy, the environment, and socio-cultural activities. Given the importance and rapid development of this industry for China, ethical and sustainable practices need to be developed, implemented, and measured. This special issue will focus on ethical and sustainability aspects within the tourism and hospitality industry in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
