About the Journal

Employee Relations is a leading international academic journal focusing on the importance of understanding employment and HR challenges and debates within the context of contemporary national and international labour markets. This embedded understanding is key to merging organizational, management and employee needs to achieve optimum performance, commitment and effectiveness. International issues are covered in all areas of HR, employment and industrial relations. A stringent double-blind review of each paper is undertaken to ensure its relevance and validity. Employee Relations continuously receives, and welcomes, global authorship.

Recent Special Issues

The changing face of employment relations (Volume 37, Issue 6) - Guest Editor: Professor Ralph Darlington. In this special issue of Employee Relations an unrivalled line-up of authors provide a fascinating reflective historical commentary on the changes and continuities within employment relations (ER) in Britain over the last 50 years, as well as consider future challenges and prospects. Topics addressed include changing patterns of work, key trends within the trade union movement, strike activity and the gender pay gap. 

Line Managers and Employee Relations (Volume 37, Issue 4) - Guest Editors: Dr Keith Townsend and Professor Tony Dundon. The last 50 years or so has witnessed a reconfiguration of organisational structure and attendant processes underpinning people management, broadly defined. One particular development has been increased emphasis on the role and function of front-line managers (FLMs) in attending to forms of employee consent, control and engagement and performance. Within this issue a range of papers reinforce the importance of various levels of line managers in the broad areas of employment regulation and employee relations dynamics. The mix of confirmatory studies and theoretical developments provides a contribution to a range of debates about possible future directions that line manager research can take in years to come.

HRM in the Digital Age (Volume 36, Issue 4) - Guest Editors: Dr Emma Parry and Professor Stefan Strohmeier. Digital technologies play an increasingly prominent role in both the lives of employees and human resource management (HRM), which seems to be affected in multiple ways. This special issue focuses on the impact of these changes on HRM, in relation to changes to the workforce, to HRM in general and more specifically to the use of technology in delivering HRM activities.
