Journal of Children's Services (JCS) encourages the international development of research-based, outcome-focused services to better safeguard and promote the well-being of children and their families locally, nationally and internationally.

Aims and scope

Journal of Children's Services (JCS) improves understanding of the way that applied social research can contribute to the evidence base and promote the integration of children’s services. This includes services delivered by health, education, social care, police, youth justice and voluntary/independent agencies.

The journal's peer-reviewed coverage includes:

  • Child and family research
  • Comparative child welfare policy and practice 
  • Evidence-informed practice and evaluation of innovative services, using quantitative and/or qualitative methods
  • Methodological issues and their application to practice
  • Practitioner led enquiry
  • Service user participation and engagement 
  • Dynamics of multi-agency and inter-disciplinary working to protect and promote the well-being of children and their families 
  • Social, political and economic analysis of childhood wellbeing 
  • Critical discussion of the conceptual frameworks that inform service provision
  • Promotion of initiatives to forge stronger links between research, policy and practice.
