Editorial Objectives

Gender in Management: An International Journal (GIM) aims to advance knowledge and practice in the area of gender in management and leadership by focusing upon empirical research, theoretical developments, practice and current issues in the international field. The journal addresses broad-ranging social issues, not limited to political and legislative decisions, social and educational policy and economic factors, in its consideration of gender in management and leadership.

Journal Scope

Gender in Management: An International Journal is committed to enabling the publication of high quality research, conceptual and thought pieces from both researchers and practitioners within the global gender in management field. GIM is the only journal which focuses on the subject of gender, grounded within management and leadership contexts.  The aim is to enable a community of GIM researchers and practitioners where they can exchange their ideas, develop and contribute to the research agendas and progress the development of GM both theoretically and in management and leadership.  GIM is essential reading for those who want an overview of the current research and practice base in GM and for practitioners seeking ways forward to develop GIM.

It is the subject of gender within the context of management and leadership which is the focus of the journal.  Any area of GIM taken from diverse discipline perspectives which makes a contribution to gender in management and/or leadership is welcome.  Authors should be explicit in their positions in relation to each of the concepts.  Authors should be precise, say what they mean and explain their positions in relation to gender, management and/or leadership to contextualise their research.

General Principles

  1. It is the subject of gender within the context of management and leadership which is the focus of the journal.  In their manuscript, authors should explicitly outline their approach in relation to the subject, context and emphasis of their research aims within the boundaries of this journal.
  2. It is our intention to publish empirical research, conceptual and thought pieces which are rigorously and/or reflexively presented and which clearly make a contribution to the research base.  Therefore authors should make explicit their reflexive practice.
  3. Whilst encouraging empirical and evidence based research, we aim to maintain a sound balance between theoretical and practice contributions and authors, regardless of type of manuscript, are asked to spell out the impact/practical implications of their work.


Any area of Gender in Management taken from diverse discipline perspectives which makes a contribution to gender in management and/or leadership is welcome. Coverage includes, but is not restricted to:

By their very nature, the subjects discussed will be timely, controversial, grounded and contextualised within the interdisciplinary GM fields.  These may result from specific community discussions concerning GM e.g. Conference Tracks, Workshops, from international, legislative and/or policy developments.  Manuscripts must not contain personalized attacks.  Again there should be a clear statement of the aims of the piece, explanation as to the context, recognition of other points of view, clear theoretical bases, and explicit indication of how the piece influences and progresses current and future research and/or practice in GM.  Therefore a clear contribution to the research base and potentiality for impact upon practice should be included.  Thought pieces should have the same rigor, style and tone as full length manuscripts providing compelling evidence for the arguments.  Thought pieces are different from full papers in that the contribution either has a narrower audience; it is more limited in its contribution or comments on previous published papers in GM.

Recent Special Issues

Theorizing Women & Leadership: Different Spaces, Different Conversations: Theories and Practices for These Times (Volume 34, Issue 3) - Guest Editors: Carole Elliot, Sue Pritchard and Valerie Stead. The emergence of this special issue is particularly motivated by the lacuna of research in business and leadership that explicitly seeks to theorise women's leadership, particularly with regard to the intersectionality of women's leadership with alternative forms of organising.

Gender and Entrepreneurship in Cross Cultural Perspectives Part 2 (Volume 33, Issue 3) - Guest Editor: Ramanjeet Singh. Although the relation between gender and entrepreneurship is a well-researched area, this special issue focuses on the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the areas of gender studies, entrepreneurship and cross-cultural management.

Gender in Management in Emerging Economies (Volume 32, Issue 8) - Guest Editors: Sanjay Kumar Singh and Rabindra Kumar Pradhan. The management of gender is critical to the effective functioning of organizations in the emerging markets if they are to become a "developed market". The serious academic inquiry in this field is relatively new and this special issue was conceptualized to evolve the body of knowledge. There are six research-based articles in this issue which have the potential to to develop new insights to solve the pressing problems which are being faced by the managers and leaders toward management of gender in the workplace.
