Intellectual capital (IC) is a crucial asset for healthcare companies. Indeed, they usually have access to large structured and unstructured elements of formal and informal know-how distributed across, for instance, knowledge of users that reside in database or reports and/or embedded in the culture of organizations themselves (Pirozzi and Ferulano, 2016). Nowadays, information and communication technologies (ICTs) in healthcare, such as RFID (Anand and Fosso Wamba, 2013), internet of things (Papa et al., 2018) or big data analytics (Wang et al., 2018), may more than ever before enable healthcare organizations to deliver a high quality services to their stakeholders as well as create new and more effective data-driven business models, increasing their performance (Fosso Wamba et al., 2017; Ferraris et al., 2018; Singh and El-Kassar, 2019). Along with the progress of new technologies in healthcare, different types of knowledge emerged through defining innovative business models relating to global markets and applicable to this complex system from various points of view, such as the presence of multiple subjects involved (e.g. physicians, policy makers, payers, patients) (Elton and O'Riordan, 2016). 

As a consequence, recent studies attested the importance on the organizational aspects related to the management of innovation and IC in healthcare (Evans et al., 2015; Wang and Byrd, 2017) as well as related practices and tools to manage intra- and inter-organizational knowledge (Del Giudice and Maggioni, 2014; Wang and Byrd, 2017), especially regarding the creation, sharing, storage and use of relevant knowledge resources (Mazzotta, 2018; Santoro et al., 2018) and design & effectiveness of  smart medical wearables (Papa et al., 2018). Evans et al. (2015) conceptualized IC of healthcare organizations as a mix of intangible resources, coupled with the value derived from internal capabilities and external relationships. Other studies support managers’ perspective in incorporating flexibility in decision-making (Dortland et al., 2014). Indeed, the consequence of health context restructuring saw the emergence of an activity of decentralization and splitting of decision-making power. Thus, in order to maximize the effectiveness of knowledge transfer strategies at national, regional and local level, healthcare organizations have to develop structures, activities and processes that allow the creation of a valid and convincing value proposition for all the stakeholders involved (Peng et al., 2007; Evans et al., 2015). Measuring and disclosing IC as well as comparing the value and the IC strategy in different time frames or with similar companies operating in the same sector, allows to provide the quantitative basis for a more objective quantification of the useful indicators for an economic assessment purpose (Petty and Guthrie, 2000; Maditinos et al., 2011; Giacosa et al., 2017).

We also expect authors to provide new proof and reveal new intuition that can bridge the gap between theory and practice, and sincerely invite contributions related, but not necessarily limited, to the following themes:

  • Measuring IC in healthcare systems and organisations
  • Selection and validation of the most suitable KPI for evaluating and managing IC in health companies
  • Reporting, disclosing and communicating IC to external stakeholders
  • Stakeholders management and social capital for healthcare organisations
  • New frameworks and models for managing and increasing IC in healthcare
  • External sources of IC for health institutions
  • Policies and programs for boosting the proper exploitation of IC by health organisations
  • Design and technical characteristics of effective information systems for the management of IC in healthcare
  • IC and innovation in health services
  • IC, medical wearables, E-health & wellbeing
  • IC development through value co-creation from patient health monitoring at home
  • Open innovation in health industry and intellectual capital implications 
  • Knowledge Management tools and processes for IC in healthcare organizations
  • Knowledge Management tools for ubiquitous monitoring devices in healthcare organizations 
  • Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection vs. openness in healthcare organizations

Contributors will need to ground their methodological approaches in extant literature. This Special Issue is opened to, but is not limited to, the topics such as IC in the healthcare context; technological, organisational and social change in healthcare; IC and performance indicators in healthcare; innovation and IC in healthcare organizations; public policies and programmes supporting social and health innovation; industrial and technological dynamics in life sciences.

Guest Editors Biographies:

Francesco Schiavone is Associate Professor in management at Parthenope University of Naples, Italy since 2016. He received the Ph.D. degree in network economics and knowledge management from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy) in 2006. He is also an Affiliated Professor in innovation management at Paris School of Business and Visiting Professor at IESEG Business School (France). In April 2017 Prof. Schiavone has been habilitated as Full Professor in management by MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education and Research). Currently, his main research areas are technology management, strategic innovation, and healthcare management and innovation.

Alberto Ferraris received his Ph.D. in Business and Management at the Department of Management, University of Turin (Italy) in 2015. He is currently a Senior Researcher at the University of Turin - Department of Management. In 2017, Dr. Ferraris has been habilitated as Associate Professor in management by MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education and Research). Within the main international activities, Dr. Ferraris is Research Fellow of the Laboratory for International and Regional Economics, Graduate School of Economics and Management, Ural Federal University (Russia). Moreover, he is an Associate Fellow (AF-EMAB) of the EuroMed Research Business Institute. Currently, his main research areas are knowledge management, intellectual capital and open innovation.

Sanjay Kumar Singh received his Ph.D. from University of Delhi, Delhi, India. At present, Dr. Singh is Associate Professor of Management in College of Business, Abu Dhabi University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). His research interests include big data analytics, international HRM, innovation management, knowledge management, talent management, sustainability and ethics. Dr. Singh has published in Journal of Business Research, The International Journal of Human Resource Management, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Personality and Individual Differences, and Technological Forecasting and Social Change

Samuel Fosso Wamba is Full Professor at Toulouse Business School. Prior, He was Associate Professor at NEOMA Business School and Senior lecturer in the School of Information Systems & Technology, University of Wollongong, Australia. He earned his Ph.D. in industrial engineering at the Polytechnic School of Montreal, Canada. His current research focuses on business value of IT, inter-organizational system adoption and use, supply chain management, electronic commerce, mobile commerce, electronic government, IT-enabled government transparency, social media, big data analytics, and blockchain.  He has published in Academy of Management Journal,  European Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Production Economics, Production Planning & Control, Information Systems Frontiers, Business Process Management Journal, and International Journal of Production Research. He is CompTIA RFID+ Certified Professional, Academic Co-Founder of RFID Academia.
