In recent years, the social sciences have begun to pay wider attention to video games. Alternate to the majority of previous investigations, these explorations have looked past the superficial and populist notions that video games could be viewed as a causation of violence. This special edition seeks to further such analysis of the range of harms proliferated, facilitated or caused by video games of the wider industry. The manuscripts selected for this special issue might, for instance, investigate ‘crunch culture’ and harms on the workers by the video game corporations; analyse the recognition of gambling mechanics embedded within games; identify previously unrecognised harms proliferated within the online spaces; and, identify embedded yet harms within gaming algorithms. Manuscripts seeking to develop theoretical perspectives of the subject are especially welcome.
