Special Issue Call for Papers: Advances in Police Investigations

Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management invites submissions for a special issue on Advances in Police Investigations, edited by Charles Wellford, University of Maryland and Thomas Scott, RTI International.

Recently, there has been an increase in research on police investigations, with a focus on explaining their impact on crime clearances. Most of this research is on homicides in the United States. This special issue solicits manuscripts on a wide range of police investigations in diverse countries. The manuscripts selected for this special issue might, for instance, build the evidence base on the effect of investigations on crime clearances for a range of investigation types; explain the role that community relations play in investigations and crime clearance; identify best practices in investigations; identify best practices in the selection and training of investigators; identify best practices in the structure and organization of investigative units; and, explain the relationship between crime clearances and crime levels. This special issue will reflect a variety of themes, including: evidence collection and processing; technology and data in investigations; witness, victim, and suspect interviewing practices including those that promote cooperation, honesty, and accuracy; investigator decision-making; intra- and inter-agency cooperation in investigations; predictors of investigative performance; and, measures of investigative success. All submitted manuscripts should be based on original, empirical research.
