Understanding the Entrepreneurial Process through a Multidisciplinary Lens: Insights from Entrepreneurship Research in Europe

This special issue aims to highlight the multidisciplinary character of entrepreneurship research, by focusing on the entrepreneurial process from a variety of perspectives and levels of analysis. Approaching entrepreneurship from a multidisciplinary perspective is important, as it contributes to a broader understanding of the entrepreneurial phenomena. At the same time, different disciplines bring forward different research questions and a variety of research methods, which ultimately demands a cohesion within the field and a common understanding from entrepreneurship scholars on what the field is and what determines its “interestingness” (Landström & Harirchi, 2019). Moreover, the focus on a multidisciplinary approach also has clear practical implications, which are of relevance to entrepreneurship practitioners (Costa, Belousova, Ouendag & Groen, 2020; Belousova, Groen & Ouendag, 2020), as well as entrepreneurship educators (Kozlinska, Rebmann & Mets, 2020).
Entrepreneurship as a research field has grown and developed immensely over the last decades. The field has undergone periods of differentiation, mobilization and academic legitimacy (Landström, 2020). This growth is also largely based on the work of scholars building up and using paradigms from other disciplines to understand the entrepreneurial phenomena (Groen, 2005). Nevertheless, addressing the multidisciplinary character of entrepreneurship research is not an easy task, as the dialogue between scholars may be difficult due to natural segmentations determined by the different disciplines (Dana, 2007). At the same time, given the complexity and the extension to which entrepreneurship reaches different societal aspects, adopting a multi-lens perspective to understand the entrepreneurial process may be beneficial and informative.
Since the seminal article of Shane and Venkataraman (2000), entrepreneurship scholars have been refocusing entrepreneurship research along the continuum of the entrepreneurial process, aiming to understand the way individuals and opportunities interact (Fayolle, 2013). Specifically, the way opportunities are identified, evaluated and exploited (Shane and Venkataraman, 2000). In this special issue we aim to highlight studies that focus on a process perspective in entrepreneurship, as well as studies researching clear distinct parts of the process of entrepreneurial activity. The combination of using a multidisciplinary lens and the focus on the entrepreneurial process often results in expanding the scope of methods used in entrepreneurship research (Dana and Dana, 2005; Dana and Dumez, 2015). Thus, along with theoretical and conceptual works, in this special issue we welcome the use of empirical (qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed) methods, especially novel and innovative designs.
The special issue welcomes submissions from the ESU community and there will be opportunity to receive early feedback during the ESU 2021 Conference (although the call is open to the whole ESU community and is not limited to the participants of this year’s conference). The special issue follows the ESU concept, focusing on a European view of entrepreneurship research. In this sense, the special issue highlights the multidisciplinary character of entrepreneurship, focusing on a European view of entrepreneurship research (Fayolle, Kyrö & Ulijn, 2005; Fayolle and Kyrö, 2008; Fayolle et al., 2013; Fayolle, Kyrö and Liñán, 2015).
To cover the wide variety of disciplines entrepreneurship can be approached from, the special issue welcomes submissions under, but not limited to the following topics:
Entrepreneurial process & entrepreneurial processes
Entrepreneurial behaviour – individual perspective; team perspective
Psychology in entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurial learning and education
Gender issues in entrepreneurship
Institutions and policy issues

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.
All papers are refereed through a peer review process.
