Overview of special issue

The subject of the special issue is focused on the topological derivative method and its applications in the computational engineering, including (but not limited to) topology optimization, inverse problems, imaging processing and fracture mechanics. The aim of the proposed special issue is to bring together outstanding works by researchers around the world in a single volume that will serve as a reference for the scientific community.

The topological derivative is a new and powerful tool for solving a wide class of engineering problems such as structural optimization, fracture mechanics, inverse problems, and material design. In 2019 the topological derivative method was used to solve a real-life engineering problem consisting in the optimization of a monopropellant thruster of an artificial satellite designed by the Argentinean space agency (CONAE). We expect that the proposed special issue will contribute to show how to use this kind of technique in real engineering applications.
