The impacts of climate change on society will be profound and will be felt for decades to come. They will challenge the way that we identify problems, provide solutions, and manage our resources. The measures that we take to reduce greenhouse emissions and decarbonise our economies will bring new challenges on the way we think and operate but will also create new and exciting opportunities. By embracing these opportunities and addressing the challenges, geoenvironmental engineers can play a crucial role in mitigating climate change and safeguarding the environment for generations to come.

This themed issue will explore the complex challenges that climate change and decarbonization pose for Geoenvironmental engineering, and the tremendous opportunities for innovation and contribution to a sustainable and climate-resilient future.

We invite original research papers, review articles, and policy analyses that address the following topics (but are not limited to) relevant to Environmental Geotechnology:

  • Increased risks and effects of extreme weather effects
  • Sea level rise, coastal erosion, and stabilization
  • Infrastructure risks and adaptation
  • Resource management, contamination, and depletion
  • Carbon capture, storage, and sequestration
  • Sustainable materials for a circular economy
  • Soil restoration and reclamation
  • Climate resilient planning and design
  • Sustainable waste management
