Introduction

Unfortunately, the world is experiencing a severe climate crisis that has reached a critical point requiring immediate action. The world is also facing several social issues, such as job displacement and income inequality which can have long-lasting effects on societies and economies. Human and business activities play a major role in environmental and social problems. To ensure a sustainable future, it is crucial to take immediate actions that rectify unsustainable business and human practices and address the complex challenges facing our environment and society. Digital technologies, such as Blockchain, artificial intelligence, chatbots, augmented reality, virtual reality, and intelligent robots, play a significant role in the transition to sustainability.

Digital technologies can enhance financial performance by improving monitoring and control, labour productivity, and production planning and reducing time to market, and inventory, maintenance and operation costs. These technologies can contribute to the environment by enhancing resource and energy consumption efficiency, facilitating the development of sustainable products, services, and processes, and reducing waste production and harmful emissions. Disruptive digital technologies provide various social benefits such as improved working conditions, new employment opportunities, product individualization, and higher customer experience and satisfaction. For instance, blockchain can offer multiple social and environmental benefits by enhancing transparency and traceability, improving trust among stakeholders, reducing data-related risks, and increasing the efficiency and speed of operations. Artificial intelligence has the power to mitigate climate crises, conserve resources, preserve the environment, and enhance the productivity of staff by automating repetitive tasks and assisting in informed decision-making. The Internet of Things (IoT) can reduce energy consumption,  minimize maintenance and operation costs, and boost customer satisfaction by facilitating automation, providing real-time information, and enabling the prediction of market trends and maintenance needs.

This Call for Papers aims to advance knowledge on (i) how emerging digital technologies affect the social and environmental performance of firms, (ii) the factors affecting the adoption of digital technologies for the enhancement of sustainable performance, and (iii) factors that influence customer behaviour towards sustainability. This special issue may serve as a forum for sharing theoretical and empirical insights into how individuals and firms are adopting digital technologies to achieve sustainability.
