FOEN Upcoming Special Issue
Submit your abstract here by 10th October 2024
Introduction
Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) fires have caused significant destruction in communities in Australia, Greece, Portugal, Spain and the USA. The WUI fire problem can be viewed as a structural ignition problem. There are not many scientific publications that allow us to understand the ignition processes of structures in fires in the WUI. Scientific building standards are needed to guide the construction of new structures in areas prone to these fires to reduce the risk of structural ignition. In historical terms, scientific research into fire safety has made a great effort to understand the dynamics of fire inside the buildings. Research into fires in the WUI and how to mitigate the loss of structures in these fires lags far behind other areas of scientific research into fire safety. This is because fire propagation in WUI is incredibly complex, involving the interaction of topography, meteorology, vegetation and structures.
The Special issue aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 Good health and well-being, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals).
