Decarbonization and Real Estate Investment


Special issue call for papers from Journal of European Real Estate Research

Sustainability in real estate has been one of the largest discussions amongst academics and professionals in recent years, and is central to EU policies regard climate change. Until now, decarbonzation in real estate has mostly been addressed with regard to energy efficiency and certification for new construction. However there is more to be discussed in order to further knowledge of sectoral decarbonzation approaches and give an insight to how real estate investments can be transformed into low- carbon investments. In this regard, the Journal of European Real Estate Research announces a call for papers for a special issue devoted to Decarbonization and Real Estate Investment.

Suggested topics include:

  • Decarbonization
  • Cost- benefit for refurbishment
  • Low- carbon investments
  • Sectoral decarbonization approaches
  • Carbon accounting
  • CO2 vs CO2e
  • EU climate goals
  • Embodied carbon
  • Scope 1, 2, 3 approaches
  • Carbon benchmarks for Real Estate
  • Energy efficiency


This list is not exhaustive and interested authors are encouraged to contact the guest editors with alternative proposals.

Please take note of the following requirements if you wish to have your paper considered for this Special Issue:

  • The content of the paper must conform to the terms of reference of the Journal of
  • European Real Estate Research
  • All papers submitted will be subject to the normal double blind refereeing process
  • undertaken by the journal
  • Submitted papers must not be under review by any other journal
  • Papers should have a strong focus on Commercial Real Estate (that includes income
  • producing residential properties). Articles must be analytic and rigorous, not merely descriptive
