The contemporary hospitality and tourism market is characterized by intense competition,
which calls for sophisticated methods for the acquisition, analysis, and application of information. Particularly with the rapid growth of the internet and on-line marketing, and with vast quantities of data from this area becoming available, developing and advancing research methods are of vital importance to hospitality and tourism practitioners and academics.

The International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management (IJCHM) aims to publish a special issue on advancing research methods in hospitality and tourism management with the intention of presenting some of the most cutting-edge and relevant methodological breakthroughs to its readers. The guest editors of this special issue take a pragmatic perspective, and welcome submissions related to all aspects of hospitality and tourism research methods, from research design, research instruments selection, sample identification, to data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting. Notably, while research techniques are obviously a focus of this issue, purely technical discussion that fails to build connections between research and practices is not encouraged. Authors are encouraged to (1) present new methods for the design, collection, or analysis of hospitality and tourism studies; (2) present existing, underused methods in a new, more accessible way that will encourage their adoption, when appropriate, by hospitality and tourism researchers; and (3) present empirical evidence concerning the utility, strengths, and limitations of hospitality and tourism research methods. Some specific example topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Interdisciplinary or mixed-method approaches
  • Experimental and quasi-experimental studies
  • Quantitative modeling and analysis
  • Case study research in hospitality and tourism
  • Psychometric methods in hospitality and tourism
  • More advanced and innovative practices in Structural Equation Modelling (SEM)
  • New forecasting approaches for hotel revenue management
  • Innovative implementations of research methods
  • New approaches in data collection and utilization (e.g., Qualtrics, MTurk etc.)
  • Measurement of hospitality and tourism concepts
  • Extraction and analysis of big data in hospitality and tourism
  • Simulation models
  • Scale development
  • Dynamic panel models
  • Research strategies and methods to handle big data
  • Qualitative research methods
  • Qualitative data analysis
  • Other relevant topics

General Information for Prospective Authors

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under
consideration for publication elsewhere. Author guidelines for IJCHM are can be found at:

Submission Procedure

Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to contact the guest editors regarding potential
topics of interest or any questions/suggestions regarding the special issue. Abstracts (up to 750
words) can be submitted directly to the guest editors via email by June 15, 2017. Abstracts
should be concise and to the point with appropriate references. The guest editors will provide
feedback on each submitted abstract.

Review Process

Each paper submitted to this special issue is subject to the following review procedures:
1. It will be reviewed by the guest editors for general suitability for this special issue.
2. If found suitable, reviewers will be selected for a double-blind review process.
3. Based on the reviewers’ recommendation, the guest editors and the Editor-in-Chief will
decide whether the particular submission should be accepted as it is, revised and resubmitted,
or declined.
