General Call for Papers

Journal call for papers from International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies

The first journal of its kind, International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies publishes lesson and learning studies that are pedagogically aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning in formal educational settings.

These studies may take the form of action research, design experiments, formative evaluations or pedagogical research more generally that is designed to foster a democratic, discursive and action orientated inquiry process. The editorial objective of the journal is to promote interdisciplinary and cross-national collaboration between groups of teacher educators, educational researchers and schoolteachers.

International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies is the official journal of the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS). WALS is an association of educational researchers and teaching professionals from various countries in the world who are dedicated to educational research that focuses directly on improving the quality of learning in classrooms and other formal learning environments through pedagogical experiments or action research.

Themes of Interest

We are interested in original research articles and case studies by academics and practitioners. Typical areas of interest include:

  • What constitutes quality in learning and how can it be evidenced and assessed?
  • How do we conceptualise the relationship between the achievement and the process aspects of learning?
  • What are the major constraints on efforts to improve the quality of learning in formal education, and how might they be overcome?
  • What new possibilities of action to resolve persistent educational problems can now be imagined?

Submission Process

In the first instance authors should submit an abstract of not more than 500 words describing the content of the proposed paper and demonstrating how it addresses the themes of the journal.

Abstracts should be sent to the Editor:
Professor Keith Wood: [email protected]

Following an initial review process, selected authors will be invited to submit a full paper. Articles should be between 3000-7000 words in length. The peer review process, formatting guidelines are available here:  Author Guidelines.

There are no cut off dates for these submissions – the call is an ongoing one.
