Publishing a chapter in a book series

A step-by-step guide

Step 1. Choose your series

You must submit your work yourself to one series only. First, see the list of series by subject area.

From this list you can go to the homepage of any series to find if it is the right outlet for your work. Look at, for example:

  • the editorial aims
  • what type of articles are accepted
  • impact factor/rankings information (if applicable).

If you feel that this series is not suitable, try some of our other titles, or contact us to ask our advice.

Step 2. Send an abstract

The homepage of each series contains contact information for the Editor. We recommend you e-mail an Editor outlining your proposed chapter (sending just the abstract is best) to see if they think it is suitable; they are usually more than willing to offer advice and will often suggest an alternative if they feel theirs is not the best outlet for your article.

Step 3. Prepare your chapter

We provide detailed guidelines on how to prepare your work for publication.

We also have a helpful guide on how to write a book chapter.

Step 4. Submit your chapter

The Editor will be able to advise you whether there is forthcoming volume that would suit your chapter. Please follow their instructions! If you do not, you are only making it more likely that your chapter will not be accepted!

If you have questions about the series (e.g. impact factor or time to publication), all contact details are on the Editorial team link on the series home page. The Publisher of the series will normally be able to answer all your questions.
