Emerald Publishing becomes first publisher to adopt F1000’s Open Research Publishing model, focusing on social sciences

Designed in partnership with F1000, authors are invited to submit their research to Emerald Open Research, which offers greater pathways to impact by immediately contributing to societal challenges and being accessible to all

Bingley, United Kingdom, 6 February 2019 – Emerald Open Research – the first Open Research Publishing platform for impactful social sciences research – has launched with its first four gateways, which tackle critical world issues linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Designed in partnership with F1000, Emerald also becomes the first publisher to adopt F1000's pioneering Open Research Publishing model, enabling rapid publication followed by transparent expert peer review, helping to maximise impact and reproducibility of a much broader range of research outputs.

Now open to submissions from researchers across the world, the four gateways – Sustainable Food Systems; Responsible Management; Sustainable Cities and Education and Learning – are based on multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research themes that address crucial real-world problems. The gateways are personalised portals linking related content under key themes.

In being an open platform, Emerald Open Research gives audiences beyond academia – be it policymakers, practitioners or the general public – quick and easy access to research relating to these topics that can create positive change for us all.

Authors can share their findings through a range of research options, including data notes, case studies, study protocols, and null or negative findings. This increases the accessibility and discoverability of research.

In a further move away from traditional publishing, all research published on Emerald Open Research will be subject to open peer review, where all reports are published alongside the article together with the authors' responses. This approach not only offers rapid publication, but the transparent peer review process encourages experts to provide constructive feedback to help authors improve their work.

Rebecca Lawrence, Managing Director of F1000 said: "We are delighted to work with Emerald on an innovative partnership that makes them the first publisher to take up the Open Research Publishing approach that we developed six years ago on F1000Research, and has since powered many funder-controlled publishing platforms. It is also particularly exciting given the focus of Emerald Open Research on the social sciences and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

"By choosing to adopt our revolutionary open research publishing model, Emerald are enabling their authors to share their research rapidly and transparently in ways that support research integrity and reproducibility. We hope many other publishers follow Emerald's pioneering lead, for the benefit of their authors, readers, and society as a whole."

Tony Roche, Director of Publishing & Strategic Relationships at Emerald, said: "Emerald Open Research is a natural extension of our commitment to open and sustainable research.

"With the drive towards open research gaining momentum, we wanted to create a platform that supported easy, rapid and transparent publishing whilst giving authors the opportunity to increase the discoverability, accessibility and reach of their research.
"The new resource is also intended to make it easier than ever before for researchers, policymakers, funders, professionals and a wider citizen audience to engage with, and comment on, research relating to so-called 'wicked' societal challenges.

"This means that authors will be able to establish new pathways to impact by rapidly contributing research that addresses societal challenges, made accessible immediately to a global audience."

In support of the Sustainable Food Systems gateway, advisory board member Professor Bob Doherty of the University of York explains how crucial and timely evidence-based debate is on this grand challenge of sustainable food systems: "Current diets are pushing the Earth beyond its planetary boundaries, while causing ill health. This puts both people and the planet at risk.

"Providing healthy diets from sustainable food systems is an immediate challenge as the population continues to grow – projected to reach 10 billion people by 2050 – and get wealthier (with the expectation of higher consumption of animal-based foods). To meet this challenge, dietary changes must be combined with sustainable food production, responsible sourcing and reduced food waste."

About F1000 F1000 provides a suite of services (F1000Workspace, F1000Prime and F1000Research) that support researchers in discovering literature, as well as writing and communicating their own work. F1000's publishing platform F1000Research has pioneered an Open Research publishing model based on fully transparent post-publication peer review. This model is being adopted by a growing number of funders, publishers and research institutions who have used F1000's services to set up similar Open Research platforms specifically for the researchers they serve. Through these platforms, funders can ensure that research outputs of their funding can be shared rapidly and transparently in ways that support research integrity and reproducibility. www.f1000.com
