Emerald launches a new open research publishing platform - Emerald Open Research - in partnership with F1000

In an extension of the Emerald Reach open access programme, Emerald Open Research, which will use services provided by F1000, offers researchers immediate open access publication and greater potential for impact of research studies that address the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals

Bingley, United Kingdom, 19 July 2018Emerald has become the first publisher to partner with the open research service provider F1000, starting Emerald’s own open research publishing platform – Emerald Open Research – using the technology, infrastructure and editorial services provided by F1000.

The publishing partnership with F1000 is a natural extension of the Emerald Reach open access programme launched in September 2017, which is designed to deliver rigorous high-quality open access content, support authors and extend their impact.

The move is a clear signal of Emerald’s commitment to helping researchers make real impact through an open research model, giving authors greater choice, reach and flexibility.

Research - which can take the form of a standard research article, case studies or open data notes, and more - will be published rapidly once submitted to Emerald Open Research, which will be operated by F1000.

The platform will use a model of immediate publication followed by transparent invited peer review, complete with full article versioning.  Authors are in control of the review process, allowing them to select expert peer reviewers, to respond to comments or questions about their research, and publish revised versions of their articles when and how they wish.

The transparent peer review process is designed to encourage constructive feedback from experts focussed on helping the authors improve their work, rather than on making an editorial decision to accept or reject an article.

Emerald Open Research will be based on interdisciplinary research themes that address crucial real world topics aligned to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Initial themes will include Sustainable Food Systems, Healthy Lives, Responsible Management, Sustainable Cities, 21st Century Education and the Digital World.

Aimee Nixon, Head of Open Research at Emerald, said: “This partnership is an exciting opportunity for academics, practitioners and policy makers to publish and disseminate research almost immediately, ensuring important advances in urgent areas of research identified by the UN rapidly reach the community.

“When it comes to publication models, our key priority is choice. It is crucial that we are able to provide our authors with a range of publication options to support their requirements.

“The partnership is also further indication of our commitment to supporting open research, and to offering innovative author tools and services to increase the discoverability, accessibility and potential impact of research.”

Rebecca Lawrence, Managing Director of F1000 said: “We are delighted that Emerald – the first publisher to use our services – has chosen to adopt our highly innovative open research publishing model.  This is a significant step in furthering our aim of offering as many authors as possible the option to publish on an open research platform and moving research and researcher assessment away from the traditional journal-based measures towards an assessment of the output itself. This model truly focuses on serving authors and their associated research communities, bringing many benefits to researchers and institutions, as well as to society more broadly.”

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust and Médecins Sans Frontières are among some of the humanitarian and charitable bodies that have partnered with F1000 to accelerate access to their research.

Emerald has been busy expanding its portfolio of open access content, and now publishes more than 30 fully open access journals, including the recently flipped International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management (IJCCSM). Emerald also offers a range of open access options to book authors and their sponsoring bodies across all formats – monographs, handbooks, short form and professional content.

Emerald Open Research will start accepting submissions at the end of 2018.

Notes for Editors About F1000: F1000 provides a suite of services (F1000Workspace, F1000Prime and F1000Research) that support researchers in discovering literature, as well as writing and communicating their own work. F1000’s publishing platform F1000Research has pioneered an Open Research publishing model based on fully transparent post-publication peer review. This model is being adopted by a growing number of funders and research institutions who have used F1000’s services to set up similar Open Research platforms specifically for the researchers they serve. Through these platforms, funders can ensure that research outputs of their funding can be shared rapidly and transparently in ways that support research integrity and reproducibility https//
