Virtual Special Issue on the theme of 'co-ordination'

The Journal of Humanitarian Logistics and Supply Chain Management is targeted at academics and practitioners in humanitarian public and private sector organizations working on all aspects of humanitarian logistics and supply chain management. The journal promotes the exchange of knowledge, experience and new ideas between researchers and practitioners and encourages a multi-disciplinary and cross-functional approach to the resolution of problems and exploitations of opportunities within humanitarian supply chains.

 Papers are based around the theme of ‘co-ordination’. JHLSCM co-Editor Nezih Altay notes:

“The inadequacy of the initial international response to the Asian tsunami in late 2004/early 2005, for example, was a wake-up call for many humanitarian actors. Consequently, in 2005 an Inter-agency standing committee ordered the humanitarian response review (HRR). The HRR process identified gaps in global humanitarian operations, one of which was the lack of coordination among humanitarian actors. Without a coordinated effort already scarce resources are often duplicated in some areas while other areas lack resources. Thus coordination places getting the ‘right goods to the right people in the right time frame’ into a more holistic framework. That said, integration of the operations of various organizations is a complex challenge and needs more research. This collection of papers published in the Journal of Humanitarian Logistics & Supply Chain Management provide a fine example of such research.”
