Guest Editors:

Scope:

In this special issue we are interested in looking at the use of performance measurement and management in different setting and in particular from the perspectives of developing practices and their link to academic knowledge of the field.

We often think of performance measurement and management coming out of manufacturing and in particular the application promoted by Taylorism. This is probably still the easiest setting in which to utilise performance measurement and management, but increasingly the world is changing and manufacturing is becoming a much smaller proportion of the economy. There is the growth of the service sector, which has different challenges, together with the need to be able to performance measure and management in government and in the third sector.

We also usually think of performance measurement in relatively stable environments, and the world is increasingly more connected, digital and fast moving. So these are also settings in which we are interested in reviewing the use of performance measurement and management.

Finally, most of the performance measurement and management research within academia has been done in the North America and Western Europe leaving a dearth of studies across the rest of the world. So studies of the use of performance measurement in different countries and cultural environments will be of interest to this special issue too.

So we are particularly interested in the practices and insights from studies of performance measurement and management in:

  • Government and not for profit sectors
  • Service sectors
  • Support functions
  • Digital applications and settings
  • Influencing the dynamics of change
  • VUCA environments
  • Developing countries
  • Aide programmes
  • Cultural settings outside North America and Western Europe
  • In other unique settings
