Emerald and Universiti Utara Malaysia are delighted to announce the winners of the 2014 Emerald-UUM Case Writing Competition!

UUM LogoThe inaugural competition attracted a total of 26 original, high quality submissions from academics based at institutions across the globe including; the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, National University of Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, University Malaysia Sarawak and the University of Northern Colorado amongst others.

The judging panel deliberated over each case study individually, scrutinising both the case and the teaching note accordingly before giving the case an overall score.

The winning cases are as follows:

  • 1st place – Mahindra Powerol: Powering entrepreneurial growth within a corporate group by Associate Professor R. Srinivasan (Indian Institute of Management Bangalore)
  • 2nd place – KKCL: Exploring growth opportunities by Assistant Professor Jyoti Kainth (Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad) & Mr Gautam Kainth (Religare Global Asset Management)
  • 3rd place – Etihad Etisalat Company (Mobily) by Miss Alia Aleshaiwi (Al Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU) & Asma Alhamdan

Winner of the competition, Associate Professor R. Srinivasan said:

“This is my first submission to the EEMCS collection, though I have reviewed a few cases for EEMCS before.

“It was an impulsive decision [to submit]. I had a case ready, and I quickly checked with the company if it was fine with them, and submitted it. It is a nice feeling to win this competition.”

2nd placed author, Assistant Professor Jyoti Kainth said:

"It is a great honour to be recognized by the two eminent institutions, Emerald and Universiti Utara Malaysia. I congratulate the institutions for the conceptualization of the competition. ‘KKCL: Exploring Growth Opportunities’ was a fascinating case to research and write.

“The competition not only boosts confidence of a case writer like me, but also brings to the surface the multi-faceted challenges that organizations face in emerging economies.”

The following cases were ranked in the top 10:

  • 4th place – A loaf of bread is just a loaf of bread : The bread war between Gardenia and Massimo by Mr. Samshul-Amry Abdul-Latif (Universiti Utara Malaysia) & Associate Professor Asmat Nizam Abdul Talib (Universiti Utara Malaysia)
  • 5th place – Gez Petrol Station: CVP analysis and spread sheet modelling for planning and decision making by Professor Ku Nor Izah Ku Ismail (Universiti Utara Malaysia), Professor Dr Wan Nordin Wan Hussin (Universiti Utara Malaysia) & Mat Supian Salleh (Universiti Utara Malaysia)
  • 6th place – Selling groceries through the Cloud in a Tier II city in India by Dr Sanjay Mohapatra, Mr Shriram Misra, Mr Rohit Padhi, Mr Subhabrata Nath Sharma, Mr Vikram Swain, Mr Subhajit Deb, Mr Neelakanth Veluru & Mr Tanay Saha Dalal (all of Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar)
  • 7th place – Hedging against currency fluctuations by Miss Raudha Md Ramli (National University of Malaysia) & Professor Abdul Ghafar Ismail (Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI)
  • 8th place – Mongolian Mining Mayhem by Professor Joseph J. French, Professor Michael Martin & Professor Garth Allen (all of University of Northern Colorado)
  • 9th place – Ar-Rahnu (Pawn-broking) in Al-Qamari Bank Berhad by Associate Professor Aisyah Abdul Rahman (National University of Malaysia)
  • 10th place – LACNOR: Does it have the juice to compete? by Dr Syed Zamberi Ahmad (Abu Dhabi University) & Dr Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar (Prince Sultan University)

The total prize fund for the competition was US$2000 with US$1000 awarded to the winner and US$500 awarded to the two runner-up cases.  All three of the prize winners will also receive a celebratory plaque, courtesy of UUM.

Certificates of recognition are also awarded to those cases placed 4th to 10th along with 3 months free access to the Emerald Emerging Markets Case Studies (EEMCS) collection courtesy of Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Emerald and Universiti Utara Malaysia would like to extend their congratulations to the winning authors!

In addition, all case submissions will be considered for publication in the Emerald Emerging Markets Case Studies (EEMCS) collection, which will further increase the international reputation and visibility, not only of the case writers, but also of their institutions.
