Editorial Objectives of the series

Critical Management Studies (CMS) is an evolving collection of radical challenges to mainstream management theory. At the heart of CMS is an enduring skepticism concerning the social and ecological sustainability of prevailing ideas and forms of management and organization. CMS counters the normative focus on techniques to attain managerial success by challenging prevailing systems of domination and promoting the development of alternatives to them. Drawing on diverse critical traditions, CMS has grown over the past two decades into a pluralistic and inclusive movement that incorporates a range of diverse perspectives. These range from labor process theory to postcolonial work, feminism and gender studies, sustainability, anthropology, sociology and cultural studies. This diversity has led to CMS being characterized by a commitment to constructive critical dialogue and intellectual curiosity and through this mode of engagement to broaden the parameters of what can be covered and included within the spaces of the business school as well as management and organization studies. 

This series will enhance and develop this tradition of dialogue through the regular publication of edited volumes. Each volume will include themed dialogic sections in which a number of contributors address a shared highly focused theme, with commentaries being made either to each contribution or to the theme more broadly.  Within this format, authors will be provided with the opportunity to submit extended contributions that would not fit a journal format and be encouraged to engage in provocative, new thinking and in experimenting with new modes of writing. Finally, DCMS will draw on contributions from a range of authors who might be PhD students, early career researchers as well as more established academics.

Topicality

Many aspects of modern life are increasingly subject to a managerial or economistic approach, in which, for instance, the efficient allocation of resources assumes predominance over humanistic or ethical concerns. Thus many nations are seeing their public services becoming subject to new forms of managerialism, and in addition many aspects of domestic and cultural activity are increasingly refracted through the lenses of business, management and economics. These trends are also visible within many universities as well as research conducted within many Business Schools. Critical Management Studies has been countering that bias for some time and is now emerging as a valid and permanent element of the Business School curriculum, with increasing presence in professional bodies representing the teachers and scholars of business, management and organization studies.

Key Benefits

This series will be of significant benefit to the rapidly expanding numbers of people with an interest in Critical Management Studies – both academics and practitioners – as there are currently very few outlets specifically devoted to CMS. It will also perform a valuable function in providing a regular collection of CMS-based contributions.

Key Audiences

The primary audience is clearly all those with an interest in Critical Management Studies. Each volume will have a specified focus which will form an additional audience for that particular volume.

In general the series will be of interest to researchers, educators and practitioners in a very wide range of disciplines, including (but not limited to) the following:-

  • All areas of Business, Management and Organization Studies
  • Economics and Political Economy
  • Third Sector, Voluntary Sector, Non-Profit Sector and Social Entrepreneurship
  • Public Administration and Social Policy
  • Human Geography and Regional Development, Regional Studies
  • Development Studies
  • Sociology, Social Theory and Cultural Studies

Coverage

The field of Critical Management Studies is very broad and includes critical perspectives upon Human Resource Management, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Accounting & Finance, Economics, Strategy, Public Sector Management, Third Sector studies, Marketing, Management History, Feminism and Gender Studies, Queer Theory, Business Ethics, Corporate Sustainability and Postcolonial Theory.

Editorial Policy

All papers are pre-circulated in good time and also introduced by one or more of the other contributors. Experience has shown that this model provides much greater opportunities for creative and useful dialogue and development.  Other elements of each volume will be determined by the co-editors for that volume in consultation with the Series Editor and Editorial Board.
