Testimonials

"The doctorate or PhD is the most mysterious of learning encounters. This collection unravels that mystery from various perspectives and is a must-read for doctoral students and PhD supervisors. How do doctoral students learn? What is the point of doctoral work in the 21st Century? This collection unravels some of the mysteries of learning in doctoral work and considers the changing role of Phd study. Doctoral students and supervisors will find this book both very reassuring and very helpful."

Stephen J Ball FBA AcSS
Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education Editor Journal of Education Policy Humanities and Social Science, Institute of Education, University of London.

"The growth of professional doctorates has been a significant feature of the higher education landscape over the past two decades. In this important new book, Alison Taysum and Stephen Rayner bring together valuable insights on this phenomenon, derived from a BELMAS funded initiative, which they pioneered. This volume is underpinned by the notion that doctorates represent an investment in professional learning. The book is a great resource for doctoral students and their supervisors."

Professor Tony Bush
University of Nottingham

"Independent educational leadership and research is essential if education is to be about more than just a business case, or of being held captive to the political imperatives of a ruling elite. For a civilised society, freedom is important. Values are important. Social justice, community, cultural and religious values are important. In a free world such need to be supported by bold, challenging, open minded, evidence based, independent research. Doctorates offer a crucial opportunity for such thinking. This volume, edited by two respected academics who have nicely ensured sound scholarship , offers an excellent range of independent perspectives bringing a refreshing look at important issues and strategic opportunities. The various authors clearly articulate internationally relevant issues related to the crucial role of the doctorate in the process bringing together evidence based research, leadership, management, and administration in a context of well blended theory and practice. It is encouraging to realise that there is such constructive thinking going on about enhancing educational leadership for the public good. "
